Q1Why are Saronic and Anduril fighting over autonomous warships now?

Saronic and Anduril are direct rivals today because both are building roughly 55-to-60-meter autonomous surface ships for the same U.S. Navy push toward a larger uncrewed fleet.

They arrived here from opposite directions. Saronic was founded in 2022 around autonomous surface vessels and has steadily moved upward in size, from small boats to the 24-foot Corsair, the 52-foot Mirage and now the 180-foot Marauder. Anduril built a much broader defense business first, then developed a serious maritime operation through underwater systems such as Dive-LD, Dive-XL and Ghost Shark before moving into large autonomous surface ships.

The overlap became much clearer when Anduril teamed with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries on a roughly 60-meter, 500-plus-ton autonomous surface vessel aimed at the U.S. Navy's Medium Unmanned Surface Vessel market. Saronic's Marauder is 180 feet, or about 55 meters, and targets essentially the same class of work: long-range autonomous operations with modular payloads that can support sensing, logistics or weapons.

The strategies are different enough to make the rivalry interesting. Saronic is trying to become an autonomous shipbuilder with its own software. Anduril is bringing its autonomy software and defense ecosystem into ships while leaning on experienced shipbuilders to manufacture them.

Both companies now want the same thing from the Navy: production orders for autonomous ships large enough to become real members of a combat fleet.

Q2Why is Saronic vs Anduril so hard to call today?

Saronic currently leads the surface-warship race, while Anduril has built the stronger maritime autonomy business around it.

If we judge only what is happening on the surface, Saronic has the cleaner record. Corsair is already in U.S. Navy service, Marauder is on the water, more Marauders are being built, and the Navy chose Saronic for its first round of Medium Unmanned Surface Vessel testing.

Anduril looks stronger once the lens widens. Ghost Shark is already in the Royal Australian Navy under a A$1.7 billion program. Anduril has several underwater vehicles, a much larger software platform, roughly $2.2 billion in annual revenue, considerably more capital and established relationships across several U.S. and allied military branches.

For this comparison, the surface-warship race gets more weight. Saronic is ahead there today.

Q3Which company is bigger and has more money to keep fighting this race?

Anduril is roughly ten times larger than Saronic by the best available revenue figures and has far more financial firepower, although Saronic has been growing much faster from a tiny starting point.

Anduril reported about $2.2 billion of revenue for 2025, roughly twice its previous year's level. That gives us a hard indication that Anduril has already become a substantial defense contractor rather than a venture-backed company waiting for major programs to arrive.

Saronic does not publish audited revenue. The Information reported that the company generated just over $200 million in 2025, while research firm Sacra puts the figure around $200 million. Using that estimate, Anduril generated about 11 times more revenue.

The growth comparison points in the other direction. Sacra estimates Saronic grew from roughly $12.5 million in 2024 to $200 million in 2025, around a sixteenfold increase. We should treat those numbers with more caution than Anduril's figures because Saronic has not confirmed them, and explosive growth from $12.5 million is much easier than doubling from more than $1 billion.

There is another problem with comparing the two revenues directly. Anduril sells air-defense systems, drones, autonomous aircraft, counter-drone technology, rocket motors, software and other products. Maritime autonomy is one piece of a much larger company. Saronic's revenue is overwhelmingly tied to autonomous vessels.

The funding gap is just as large. Saronic closed a $1.75 billion financing at a $9.25 billion valuation, taking total disclosed private funding to roughly $2.6 billion. For a company founded in 2022, that is an exceptional amount of capital.

It also has exceptionally expensive plans. A $300 million shipyard expansion, a multi-billion-dollar Port Alpha project, large inventories of vessels, testing sites and a rapidly growing workforce can consume money much faster than a software business.

Using the roughly $200 million third-party estimate for 2025 revenue, Saronic's latest valuation is about 46 times annual sales. That tells us investors are paying primarily for future production rather than today's cash generation.

Anduril raised $5 billion at a $61 billion valuation after generating roughly $2.2 billion in 2025 revenue. The latest completed round alone was almost twice all of Saronic's disclosed funding to date.

Anduril is also currently discussing another financing that could value the company around $100 billion, according to Reuters. We do not count that as completed capital because the transaction remains under discussion, but it shows how easily Anduril can currently attract very large pools of private money.

Anduril therefore wins both commercial scale and financial endurance by a wide margin. Saronic has enough capital to remain a serious competitor, but Anduril has much more room to absorb a slow start in surface warships.

Q4Which company has won more actual naval spending?

Anduril has secured more committed naval spending overall, while Saronic has the stronger disclosed production award for autonomous surface boats.

Australia's government signed a A$1.7 billion five-year contract with Anduril Australia for Ghost Shark. The program covers delivery, continued development and support of dozens of extra-large autonomous underwater vehicles. At recent exchange rates, A$1.7 billion is roughly US$1.1 billion.

Saronic's largest disclosed Navy production deal is a $392 million agreement covering multiple batches of autonomous maritime vessels through 2031, with nearly $200 million committed early in the program. Public contracting records identify the product category as small craft, and subsequent Navy and company statements have tied the production effort to Corsair.

Ghost Shark's A$1.7 billion includes sustainment and further development over five years, while Saronic's $392 million deal is much more directly tied to surface-vessel production. Anduril still has the larger naval commitment overall.

Q5How much real military and combat use has Saronic proved?

Saronic is clearly ahead of Anduril in autonomous surface vessels that have moved beyond demonstrations into real military operations, including combat.

By spring 2026, Defense Technology Review reported that Saronic had delivered more than 100 Corsairs. The company says its vessels have accumulated more than 100,000 nautical miles across testing and operations, although that mileage comes from Saronic rather than an independently audited dataset.

Earlier this year, eight Corsairs completed a week-long exercise more than 70 nautical miles offshore, running missions day and night from a shore operations center. Saronic used the exercise to test reliability and endurance rather than stage a short demonstration.

Then the Navy started using Corsair in an active theater. U.S. Central Command said Task Force 59 had begun fielding the boats in the region by late March. A Navy-operated Corsair subsequently recovered two U.S. Army aviators after an AH-64 Apache went down near Oman and carried them to a point where a helicopter could extract them.

Three Corsairs were later used by U.S. forces against Iran's Bandar Abbas naval base in July. U.S. Central Command described the operation as the first American combat use of unmanned surface vessels. The boats struck a submarine and ship-maintenance facility.

That gives Saronic an unusually complete progression: production, sustained exercises, theater deployment, rescue and combat use.

The limit is Marauder. Corsair is a 24-foot vessel carrying around 1,000 pounds over roughly 1,000 nautical miles, while Marauder is a 180-foot ship built for far longer missions and much larger payloads. Corsair has proved real military utility; Marauder still has to do the same.

Anduril has plenty of maritime operational experience underwater, but its new large surface vessel has not reached the water yet. The first roughly 60-meter hull is currently being built by HD Hyundai in South Korea.

Q6Who is ahead in the Navy's medium autonomous warship competition?

Saronic is ahead in the Navy's current Medium Unmanned Surface Vessel competition, although the gap is slightly less clean than the Navy's published company list first suggests.

The Navy selected seven companies for the first MUSV at-sea demonstration round: Saronic, Sea Machines, Leidos, Galliano Marine Services, PacMar Technologies, Birdon and Huntington Ingalls Industries. Companies that complete the testing successfully receive $15 million and become eligible for follow-on production.

Saronic entered Marauder directly under its own name.

Anduril did not appear on that published list. There is an important wrinkle, however. Galliano Marine Services operates within the Edison Chouest Offshore group, and Anduril had already announced Edison Chouest as its U.S. production partner for the MUSV bid. USNI News reported that Galliano was selected for two vessel concepts while also noting that Anduril itself was absent from the Navy's list. Public information does not clearly establish whether one of those Galliano concepts uses Anduril's vessel or autonomy package.

Saronic still has the stronger position. Marauder is already afloat. The first 180-foot vessel was moved to Gulfport for testing and commissioning and, according to Saronic's latest update, has now logged hundreds of hours on the water with trials running more than 12 hours a day, seven days a week. Additional Marauders are being built in Louisiana.

Anduril's competing ship remains under construction. Defense News reported that the first vessel is expected to enter the water in October, after which Anduril plans further trials before taking the ship to the U.S. coast.

Saronic therefore has the physical lead today: its medium autonomous ship is already in sustained on-water testing.

Q7Who is winning autonomous naval warfare underwater?

Anduril is far ahead of Saronic underwater, and Ghost Shark is probably the strongest single maritime program either company has today.

The Royal Australian Navy now has production Ghost Sharks in service. Australia's Defence Minister said this year that Ghost Shark is already in the Navy, while Australian naval publications reported that the first production vehicle was delivered in January.

That follows an unusually fast development cycle. Australia and Anduril began the program in 2022, produced three prototypes, delivered them on budget and ahead of schedule, built a dedicated 7,400-square-meter production facility in Sydney and then moved into a A$1.7 billion program of record for dozens of vehicles.

Ghost Shark can support intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and strike missions over long distances. Australia has deliberately kept details such as exact range and payloads classified.

Anduril also has an entire family around it. Dive-LD and Dive-XL address large autonomous underwater missions, Copperhead adds a smaller high-speed vehicle that can carry sensors or military payloads, and Seabed Sentry targets persistent underwater sensing.

Saronic's public product line remains concentrated on the surface.

For anyone defining autonomous warships broadly enough to include uncrewed submarines, Anduril's position changes the whole comparison. Saronic may lead large autonomous ships on top of the water, but Anduril currently owns the more mature autonomous combat platform underneath it.

Q8Does Anduril really have better autonomy software than Saronic?

Anduril has the broader autonomy platform, but we would no longer give it an easy technical win over Saronic at sea.

Lattice has a bigger ambition than Saronic's Echelon. Anduril wants one software layer capable of coordinating aircraft, surface vessels, underwater vehicles, sensors and weapons from different manufacturers. During the Navy's Integrated Battle Problem 24.1, Lattice integrated more than a dozen uncrewed platforms and data sources across air, surface and subsurface operations.

That breadth is valuable. A future autonomous ship will probably spend much of its time reacting to information produced elsewhere, such as an aircraft detecting a target, a subsea sensor classifying it and another platform being assigned to investigate or strike it. Anduril has been building directly toward that multi-domain model for years.

Its maritime reliability record also contains an important warning. The Wall Street Journal reported that more than a dozen unmanned boats stopped carrying out their missions during a Navy exercise in California after the vessels rejected commands and entered a fail-safe idle state. The boats were BlackSea platforms running Lattice. Anduril blamed a bug in the boats' software, said it fixed the issue and returned to complete autonomous missions a few days later. Several people familiar with the exercise told the Journal they believed Anduril carried responsibility for the integration failure.

The episode is a useful reminder of how difficult cross-platform autonomy gets once software, boats and communications come from different suppliers.

Saronic takes the opposite approach with Echelon. The software is built specifically around Saronic vessels and controls mission planning, simulation, navigation and fleet command. The system is narrower, but Saronic owns both sides of the interface and can tune vessel behavior around hardware it designed itself.

Today, this one is split. Anduril has the more powerful architecture on paper and much more experience coordinating different systems. Saronic has the cleaner surface integration model and growing operational evidence from its own vessels.

The Navy will eventually decide which advantage it values more.

Q9Who is closer to turning an autonomous ship into a serious weapons platform?

Saronic currently has the more ambitious large surface-strike path, while Anduril has more weapons and autonomous platforms that can already work together across domains.

Saronic plans to launch Castelion's Blackbeard hypersonic weapon from Marauder in 2027. The companies have already worked together, with a Corsair supporting a Blackbeard flight test as an autonomous telemetry and communications node.

The missile side of that partnership has also become more credible lately. The Navy awarded Castelion $23.4 million for 50 Blackbeard pre-production weapons and containers after earlier development and aircraft-integration awards. Castelion also signed a framework targeting at least 500 weapons annually once testing and validation are complete.

Saronic is pairing a vessel that already exists with a missile that is moving toward production, then trying to prove the combination at sea. If the demonstration works, Marauder could become a distributed missile carrier rather than mainly a logistics or sensor platform.

Anduril's weapons approach is broader. Copperhead-M is designed to give autonomous underwater platforms a torpedo-like military effect, and Anduril controls other weapons, interceptors, loitering munitions and rocket technology elsewhere in the company. Lattice can potentially connect those effectors with sensors and platforms across several domains.

For large autonomous surface strike, Saronic is currently pushing further. Anduril has more pieces of the wider kill chain.

Q10Can Saronic or Anduril actually build autonomous warships at scale?

Saronic has the stronger production setup for autonomous surface ships today, while Anduril has assembled a formidable shipbuilding network that could scale quickly once its vessel is ready.

Saronic has already committed heavily to physical production. It acquired a shipyard in Franklin, Louisiana and is spending another $300 million to add roughly 300,000 square feet of capacity. Saronic says the expanded site should eventually support around 20 Marauders per year.

The company recently added a 30,000-plus-square-foot Gulfport operation specifically for commissioning and on-water trials. That is more important than it may sound. If Marauder production rises, Saronic needs a repeatable flow from fabrication in Louisiana through testing and final delivery rather than treating each hull as a custom engineering project.

Port Alpha is the much bigger bet. Saronic has chosen Brownsville, Texas for a planned investment of more than $3 billion in a next-generation shipyard. The facility remains a future capability, so we do not give Saronic credit today for ships that Port Alpha may produce years from now.

Saronic has also started bringing in outside shipbuilding expertise. Its latest partnership with Samsung Heavy Industries covers vessel development, production infrastructure and robotics-based automation across Saronic's shipyards. That suggests Saronic understands the risk of trying to reinvent large-scale shipbuilding entirely by itself.

Anduril chose partnerships much earlier. HD Hyundai has delivered more than 5,000 vessels and is building the first large ASV in South Korea. In the U.S., Anduril is working with Edison Chouest Offshore, whose group has thousands of workers, numerous shipbuilding facilities and an operating fleet of roughly 300 vessels.

The two companies have ended up with credible but very different industrial models. Saronic currently has more autonomous surface hardware moving through its own production pipeline. Anduril can draw on far deeper traditional shipbuilding experience without carrying the whole industrial burden itself.

Q11Which company has the stronger naval customers outside the U.S.?

Anduril has the stronger international naval customer base today because Australia is already buying an autonomous combat fleet, while Saronic's overseas relationships are still earlier.

Australia is the obvious difference. The Royal Australian Navy helped develop Ghost Shark, funded the prototype phase, placed a A$1.7 billion production contract and now has production vehicles entering service. This is much deeper than an export sale because Anduril is embedded in the country's capability development, manufacturing base and supply chain.

Australia has also made Ghost Shark an export priority. That could give Anduril a government-backed route into other allied navies if export approvals follow.

Saronic is building its own international network. Taiwan's National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology signed an agreement with Saronic covering areas such as autonomous navigation, AI-enabled target recognition, multi-vessel coordination, command software and local USV development. That relationship is strategically interesting because Taiwan is one of the places where inexpensive autonomous surface vessels could become particularly important.

Saronic has also partnered with Lloyd's Register around classification and regulatory pathways in the UK, Europe and Australia.

Anduril is still clearly ahead here because it already has a foreign navy buying and fielding one of its autonomous combat platforms.

Q12Which company's advantage will be harder to copy?

Saronic is building the harder surface-warship advantage today, while Anduril could eventually own a broader layer of autonomous warfare that is even more valuable.

Saronic's emerging advantage comes from repetition. It designs the vessel, writes the autonomy software, builds the hardware, operates the test sites and increasingly controls the manufacturing process. Every additional Corsair or Marauder gives the company more information about reliability, maintenance, navigation and production.

The newest Marauder testing is particularly useful here. Hundreds of hours on the water, with testing running more than 12 hours a day, starts exposing the boring problems that determine whether a ship can actually be deployed repeatedly. Those problems are harder to learn from simulations.

Anduril's potential moat sits one level higher. Lattice is designed to coordinate systems from different manufacturers and across different domains. If the Navy eventually wants a common autonomy layer running aircraft, ships, submarines, sensors and weapons, Anduril could become important even when it does not manufacture every platform itself.

That would create a difficult position for a specialist such as Saronic. Saronic could build an excellent ship while another company controls how that ship communicates with the rest of the force.

There is no evidence that the Navy has already chosen that architecture, and Lattice's maritime integration problems show that interoperability comes with its own technical costs.

For now, Saronic's advantage is more tangible in surface warships. Anduril's potential advantage reaches further across the battlefield.

Q13Are Saronic and Anduril actually leading the autonomous warship market?

Saronic and Anduril are among the most important companies in autonomous naval warfare, but the Navy is deliberately creating a market where several suppliers can survive.

The first MUSV competition makes that clear. Seven companies reached at-sea demonstrations, including Saronic, Sea Machines, Leidos, Galliano Marine Services, PacMar, Birdon and Huntington Ingalls Industries. The Navy plans to let successful vessels qualify for follow-on orders rather than immediately locking the fleet into one supplier.

Other companies are attacking different sizes and mission sets. BlackSea Technologies already supplies the Navy's Global Autonomous Reconnaissance Craft. HavocAI is pushing smaller collaborative surface vessels. Blue Water Autonomy is developing larger autonomous ships. Established groups such as HII and Leidos bring deep Navy integration experience.

Foreign competition is moving quickly as well. Ukraine has already shown how small one-way surface drones can change naval operations, while countries including Turkey, South Korea, China and Indonesia are developing their own armed USVs.

Saronic currently has one of the strongest positions in the medium surface layer, while Anduril is stronger across the broader autonomous maritime stack.

Q14So who is winning Saronic vs Anduril in autonomous warships right now?

Saronic is winning the autonomous surface-warship race today, and we think that is the right answer to the headline, even though Anduril is the stronger company overall.

The reason is very concrete: Saronic is further along with the actual ships.

Marauder is already afloat and is currently accumulating sustained testing hours. More hulls are being built. Saronic entered the Navy's first MUSV competition directly under its own name. Anduril's comparable 60-meter vessel remains under construction.

Saronic has also built a convincing path into the larger ship. Corsair moved through testing, a large Navy production agreement, theater deployment, personnel recovery and combat use. Those experiences do not automatically transfer to a 180-foot Marauder, but they show that Saronic has repeatedly managed to get autonomous surface hardware out of development and into military hands.

The Navy's first MUSV selection still needs one caveat: Anduril's partner Edison Chouest is represented through Galliano Marine Services. Even then, Saronic has the physical lead today.

Anduril has three advantages that could reverse the result.

Ghost Shark gives Anduril a major autonomous naval program already in production and service. Lattice gives it a route toward controlling the wider software architecture of an autonomous force. And its capital and shipbuilding partnerships give Anduril plenty of room to catch up once its first large surface vessel reaches the water.

Saronic now needs Marauder to finish sustained testing, perform well in the Navy's MUSV evaluation and convert that progress into a real production order. Anduril needs its first large ASV to launch, survive serious at-sea testing and enter a Navy production pathway.

Methodology and sources

The question here is deceptively difficult because Saronic and Anduril are ahead in different parts of autonomous naval warfare. Rather than rely on company reputation, size, one big contract or a general sense of who “feels” stronger, we broke the comparison into the dimensions that can actually change the answer: comparable surface vessels, Navy traction, operational use, undersea capability, autonomy software, weapons integration, manufacturing, international customers, financial endurance and the durability of each company’s emerging advantage.

For each dimension, we reviewed the freshest relevant evidence available as of August 2026, assessed it point by point, and then brought those findings together. Ships already in the water carried more weight than announced ships; sustained testing more than concepts; operational deployment more than demonstrations; confirmed contracts and completed financings more than plans or discussions; and directly named program participation more than participation inferred through a partner.

We relied first on military and government releases, contract and program disclosures, and company announcements for first-hand facts, then used top-tier reporting to verify or contextualize them. Where a figure remains an estimate, such as some private-company revenue data, we keep it separate from reported or contract-backed figures rather than treating every number as equally firm.

The final judgment is not a mechanical points tally. Because the headline asks who is winning autonomous warships, progress toward deployable autonomous surface combatants carries more weight than overall corporate scale or strength in an adjacent category. That is why two conclusions can hold at once: Anduril is the stronger company across the broader autonomous-maritime stack, while Saronic is further ahead today in the autonomous surface-warship race.
