Perplexity is reportedly building its own Cursor rival

The Signal, Explained in 3 Minutes

Q1What actually happened?

Business Insider says Perplexity is internally testing an AI coding tool called Teammate. It is not just a code autocomplete tool. The reported idea is closer to an AI project operator: it can watch a software project, find bugs, monitor services, and help move work from idea to shipped code. For now, it is being used inside Perplexity, not sold publicly.

Q2Why is this more interesting than another coding tool?

Because Perplexity is known as an AI search company, not a developer-tools company. So the signal is that Perplexity may be using its own engineering team as the test lab for a new product category. If Teammate works internally, the company could package its own way of building software and sell it to other teams.

Q3What is the tension here?

The tension is that Perplexity is already fighting Google in search, but now it may also be stepping into one of the hottest AI markets: coding agents. That puts it closer to Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, OpenAI Codex, and Devin-style tools.

Q4How is Teammate different from Cursor?

Cursor is mostly where developers write and edit code. Teammate, from the reporting, sounds more like something that supervises the whole software workflow. Think less “help me change this file” and more “keep track of the project, detect problems, monitor what is running, and push work forward.” That is a bigger promise, but also much harder to make reliable.
