Musk: it will be "America’s fastest industrial scale-up since WWII"
Tesla says it is building what Elon Musk calls America’s fastest industrial scale-up since World War II. The real bet is not one new factory. Tesla is trying to launch Cybercab production while designing Optimus lines for 1 million robots a year in Fremont and 10 million in Texas, capacity that would dwarf today’s humanoid robot industry.

Q1What did Tesla officially say?
In its Q2 2026 update, Tesla said Cybercab production had started in Texas and construction had begun on the Fremont Optimus factory after the Model S and X lines were removed. Musk then framed the combined buildout as America’s fastest industrial scale-up since World War II.
Q2How big is the Optimus plan?
Tesla is designing Fremont for 1 million robots a year and a later Texas line for 10 million. For context, Tesla produced about 450,000 vehicles in Q2, roughly 1.8 million at that quarterly pace. The Texas robot target alone would be more than five times that annualized vehicle output.
Q3How does that compare with rivals?
The gap is extreme. Figure designed its first BotQ line for 12,000 humanoids a year, while Agility Robotics built RoboFab for up to 10,000. Tesla’s 1 million Fremont design is roughly 83 times Figure’s stated first-line capacity. Its 10 million Texas target is closer to consumer electronics scale than today’s humanoid industry.
Q4Is this real production or still a promise?
It is both. Cybercab production has started, and Tesla has physically cleared the old Model S and X lines for Optimus. But designed capacity is not actual output. The hard parts are still robot reliability, hands, actuators, supply chains, training data, factory yield, and finding millions of jobs the robots can perform safely.
Q5Why is Tesla moving this fast now?
Tesla is trying to turn autonomy and robotics into its next growth engine before its car business has to fund the transition for too long. It plans more than $25 billion of capital spending in 2026, versus $8.5 billion in 2025, and spent $5.8 billion in Q2 alone. That speed already pushed quarterly free cash flow below zero.
Q6So what is the real signal?
Tesla is skipping the normal pilot-to-factory sequence and building for massive volume before Optimus demand and economics are proven. If the robots work, Tesla could set the cost curve for the whole humanoid market. If they do not, this becomes one of the most expensive industrial overbuilds in recent memory.
