FCC blocks Unitree’s next robots, opening America’s humanoid race
The FCC has blocked future foreign-made humanoid robots from receiving normal US equipment approval, while leaving previously authorized models untouched. That gives Unitree a strange deadline: its current robots can stay, but its next generation may arrive just as American rivals finally begin scaling factories, orders, and real deployments.

Q1What actually happened?
On July 28, the FCC officially added foreign-produced advanced robotic devices to its Covered List. New humanoids, quadrupeds, and many connected mobile robots can no longer receive normal FCC equipment approval unless US defense officials grant a conditional exemption. Previously authorized robots are not automatically removed, so Unitree’s current US lineup can remain available while future models face a much harder entrance.
Q2Why does this hit Unitree so hard?
Unitree became important because it sells capable humanoids and robot dogs at prices that startups, universities, and developers can actually reach. American humanoids are often unavailable, limited to selected customers, or far more expensive. The FCC is not disabling today’s Unitree robots. It is cutting the bridge to whatever Unitree planned to launch next, exactly when humanoid hardware is improving fastest.
Q3Does this automatically hand America the lead?
No. It protects the US market, not the global race. Chinese companies still have a huge manufacturing base, dense supplier networks, and access to customers outside America. Unitree can keep improving and shipping elsewhere. The risk is that US companies get a safer home market while Chinese companies collect more robots, users, and training data across the rest of the world.
Q4Who is ready to fill the gap?
Agility says it has more than $300 million in multi-year Digit V5 orders. Figure said in April that its factory moved from producing one Figure 03 per day to one per hour. Boston Dynamics says every Atlas deployment planned for 2026 is already committed. Tesla has started preparing a Fremont Optimus line designed for eventual capacity of one million robots per year. The catch is that orders and factory targets are not the same as thousands of reliable robots working every day.
Q5Could the ban slow America down too?
Yes. Many US researchers and young robotics companies use affordable Chinese hardware as a starting point. They add their own software, hands, sensors, or AI instead of spending years building a complete robot. Removing that shortcut may help American manufacturers, but it can also raise costs and reduce the number of teams experimenting with physical AI.
Q6So what is the real signal?
America is no longer treating humanoids as normal electronics. It is treating them like drones, telecom equipment, and other strategic infrastructure where market access depends on national security and domestic manufacturing. Unitree has not been erased, but the US has frozen its current position while giving domestic rivals time to turn ambitious production claims into actual fleets.
