Police are cracking down on robotaxi abuse as fleets multiply
Robotaxis are no longer just being tested. Waymo now runs roughly 4,000 vehicles, including more than 300 in Austin, and that scale is creating a new problem: cities need a way to punish a car when there is no human driver to ticket. Austin has already issued 83 citations worth $9,325, while California has just closed the legal loophole that once made many driverless traffic violations hard to enforce.

Q1What actually happened?
According to The Wall Street Journal, Waymo robotaxis have received 83 parking citations worth $9,325 since entering Austin in 2024. The cars were cited for stopping in tow-away zones, metered spaces, disabled parking areas, and other places where they should not wait. Waymo has paid $7,433 so far, with the rest still pending.
Q2Why does $9,325 matter?
The amount itself is tiny. Austin collected $6.3 million in parking fines during fiscal 2025. The real signal is that robotaxi mistakes are turning into normal operating costs. Waymo already has more than 300 vehicles in Austin and roughly 4,000 across the US. A small error repeated across thousands of cars can quickly become a city-level problem.
Q3Could police not ticket robotaxis before?
Not easily. Traffic laws were written around a human driver, so officers sometimes had nobody to cite. In September 2025, California police stopped a Waymo after an illegal U-turn but could not issue a normal ticket because the driver’s seat was empty. California changed that on July 1, 2026. Police can now issue notices directly against autonomous vehicle companies.
Q4Is this only about bad parking?
No. Parking tickets are the easy part. The harder problem is what happens when robotaxis meet police, firefighters, road closures, construction crews, or major crowds. Driverless cars have already blocked roads, struggled around emergency scenes, and become stuck during heavy traffic. Cities now want fast hotlines, remote control tools, and ways to keep entire fleets out of restricted areas.
Q5Does this mean robotaxis are unsafe?
Not necessarily. Waymo says its vehicles have a much lower serious crash rate than human drivers across tens of millions of miles. But crash safety and city behavior are different tests. A car can avoid major collisions and still stop in the wrong place, block an ambulance, ignore an officer, or trap traffic. Robotaxis now have to pass both tests.
Q6So what is the bigger shift?
Robotaxis are moving from special experiments to regulated city infrastructure. When fleets were small, strange behavior looked like an edge case. At thousands of vehicles, the same mistake becomes repeatable and expensive. The next fight is no longer just about whether autonomous cars can drive. It is about whether cities can control them, punish them, and remove them when the software gets it wrong.
