CAR-T puts three of six severe arthritis patients into remission
A Phase 1 trial used CD19 CAR-T cells in six people with severe rheumatoid arthritis that had resisted standard treatment. All six improved, and three reached clinical remission while off disease-modifying drugs. The deeper shift is that a therapy built for blood cancers is being tested as an immune-system reset for autoimmune disease.

Q1What did the study officially report?
The Nature Medicine Phase 1 trial treated six people with severe, treatment-refractory rheumatoid arthritis using mivocabtagene autoleucel, a CD19 CAR-T therapy. All six improved and three reached DAS28-CRP remission at latest follow-up.
Q2Why target B cells?
Rheumatoid arthritis can be driven by harmful antibodies and B-cell activity. CAR-T can deeply remove CD19-positive B cells, potentially allowing the immune system to rebuild without the same disease-driving population.
Q3How strong is six patients?
It is enough for a serious early signal, not proof of a cure. The study was nonrandomized and designed mainly to test safety. Phase 2 must show whether remission rates hold in a larger group.
Q4Why does this matter beyond arthritis?
CAR-T is already being explored across lupus and other autoimmune diseases. If one-time cell therapy can replace years of immune-suppressing drugs for some patients, the addressable market becomes much larger than oncology alone.
