SpaceX is hiring engineers and skilled-trades workers to build AI supercomputer clusters on Earth and in orbit. The bigger signal is that orbital compute has moved beyond an Elon Musk presentation and into active staffing, just weeks after SpaceX outlined satellites carrying 150 kilowatts of compute and a factory targeting 1 gigawatt of annual space AI capacity by late 2027.

Q1What actually happened?
Elon Musk said SpaceX is recruiting engineers and skilled-trades workers to build and operate powerful AI clusters both on Earth and in space. Applicants were asked to email a resume plus three bullet points proving exceptional ability. This is not a normal software hiring post. SpaceX needs people who can turn AI compute into physical machines that survive factories, launches and orbit.
Q2Is SpaceX seriously building data centers in orbit?
Yes. SpaceX recently presented an AI satellite with large solar wings, radiators, laser links and roughly 150 kilowatts of peak compute power. It also outlined a huge Gigasat factory in Texas and said it wants to reach an annual production rate of 1 gigawatt of orbital AI compute by late 2027. That would require more than 6,000 of these satellites per year. The hiring post matters because those targets now need an actual workforce.
Q3Why put AI compute in space?
AI data centers on Earth need enormous amounts of electricity, land, grid access and cooling equipment. Orbit offers strong solar energy without waiting years for a new power connection. But space does not provide free cooling. Heat can only leave through large radiators, and moving huge amounts of data between Earth and orbit remains difficult. Space solves some bottlenecks while creating several brutal new ones.
Q4Has anyone already run AI hardware in space?
Yes, on a much smaller scale. Starcloud launched a satellite carrying an Nvidia H100 GPU in November 2025 and said it ran a version of Google’s Gemma model and trained a small GPT model in orbit. Google, Sophia Space, Axiom Space and others are also exploring orbital compute. SpaceX is not first to test the idea. Its advantage is that it already owns rockets, satellite factories, laser links and one of the world’s largest operating constellations.
Q5What makes SpaceX’s plan unusually ambitious?
Scale. Starcloud has asked regulators for up to 88,000 compute satellites. Musk has discussed a possible SpaceX network reaching as many as one million satellites. SpaceX also wants to grow from 1 gigawatt of annual space compute production to 100 gigawatts by 2030. Those numbers are far beyond today’s demonstrations, so the tension is simple: SpaceX has the launch machine to attempt this, but nothing close to this scale has ever operated.
Q6So what does this hiring post really prove?
It does not prove orbital data centers will be cheaper or technically practical. It proves SpaceX is moving the idea from pitch to execution. The company is now looking for the people who can solve power systems, heat rejection, networking, manufacturing and cluster operations. The next proof points are factory construction, working hardware, launches and useful compute delivered from orbit. Until then, this is serious intent, not proven economics.
