HistoSonics developed the Edison Histotripsy System, which uses precisely focused ultrasound pulses to mechanically destroy targeted liver tissue without heat or an incision. The FDA granted De Novo authorization in 2023.

Q2How is this different from normal ultrasound?

Diagnostic ultrasound listens for echoes. Histotripsy delivers much stronger focused pulses that create microscopic bubbles, mechanically breaking apart targeted tissue while imaging guides the treatment.

Q3Why is avoiding heat useful?

Many ablation systems burn or freeze tissue, which can be difficult near sensitive structures. Histotripsy is nonthermal, giving doctors another way to target selected liver tumors without inserting an ablation probe.
