Q1What actually happened?
China’s National Medical Products Administration approved NEO for commercial medical use in March 2026, and surgeons have now reportedly implanted it in the first patient treated outside the original trial. NEO reads signals linked to intended hand movement and turns them into commands for a powered glove.
Q2Is NEO really an invasive brain implant?
Not in the same way as Neuralink. NEO is usually described as semi-invasive because its eight electrodes rest on the dura, the protective layer covering the brain. They do not pierce deep into the cortex. Surgery is still required, but the brain tissue itself is not penetrated by hundreds or thousands of tiny electrodes.
Q3Why did China approve it before Neuralink?
NEO is attempting a narrower job with simpler hardware. It has eight electrodes and currently focuses on helping people with spinal cord injuries control a mechanical glove. Neuralink uses more than 1,000 electrodes and aims for richer computer control. More bandwidth can unlock more functions, but it also creates harder surgical, reliability, and regulatory problems.

Reports say NEO completed around 18 months of testing involving 32 people without serious device-related safety events. The approved use is also narrow: adults aged 19 to 60 with paralysis caused by neck or spinal cord injuries. That is very different from approving brain chips for healthy consumers or broad human enhancement.

No. It has beaten Neuralink to this regulatory and commercial milestone. Neuralink may capture much richer signals because its threads enter the cortex, while NEO records from the brain’s surface with only eight electrodes. China is ahead on getting a simpler system approved. Neuralink is still pursuing a harder and potentially more capable system through clinical trials.

The patient imagines moving a hand. NEO detects the related brain activity, software decodes the signal, and a powered glove performs the movement. That can help with basic tasks such as holding a cup, moving utensils, or gripping personal-care items. It does not restore natural movement inside the injured limb by itself.
Q7So why does this matter now?
Because the brain-interface race is leaving the demo stage. The first commercial winner is not the system with the most electrodes or the biggest science-fiction promise. It is a simpler medical device aimed at one practical disability. The next test is whether hospitals can repeat the procedure, insurers will pay for it, patients gain useful independence, and the implant keeps working safely for years.
