SpaceX is launching Starship again after its IPO debut
SpaceX has flown Starship for the first time since its massive June IPO. The rocket deployed 20 test Starlink V3 satellites and brought the ship through reentry, but its booster missed the landing. That makes this more than another test: public investors can now watch the hardware behind SpaceX’s trillion-dollar story succeed or fail in real time.

Q1What officially happened?
According to SpaceX’s official flight report, Starship lifted off from Texas on July 24 for its 13th test flight. It was the first Starship launch since SpaceX went public in June and only the second flight of the newer V3 vehicle.
Q2What made this flight different?
Starship released 20 test versions of the next-generation Starlink V3 satellite. That matters because the larger V3 satellites are designed around Starship’s huge capacity. Falcon 9 built Starlink, but Starship is supposed to unlock its next scale jump.
Q3Did the test actually succeed?
Mostly, but not completely. The ship deployed its test payloads, survived reentry and reached its planned splashdown area in the Indian Ocean. The Super Heavy booster failed to relight enough engines during its landing burn and crashed into the Gulf. SpaceX proved more of the mission, but full reuse is still unfinished.
Q4Why does the IPO change the story?
Before the IPO, SpaceX could develop Starship mostly away from public-market pressure. Now every launch tests the story investors bought. SpaceX raised about $75 billion at roughly a $1.77 trillion valuation, and Starship is a major reason investors accepted that price.
Q5Why does SpaceX need Starship so badly?
Because Falcon 9 cannot deliver the same payload volume at the same hoped-for cost. Starship is designed to carry more than 100 metric tons in a reusable configuration. SpaceX needs that capacity for bigger Starlink satellites, lunar missions and, eventually, much more frequent heavy launches.

SpaceX has already proved it can launch rockets often with Falcon 9. It has not yet proved Starship can fly, land and fly again like routine infrastructure. Flight 13 moved the payload side forward, but the failed booster return shows the hardest promise, rapid full reuse, is not solved yet.
