The U.S. installed a record 57.6 GWh of energy storage in 2025, about four times the amount installed three years earlier. More strikingly, SEIA says roughly two-thirds of all U.S. storage capacity was installed in a single year, which is what an infrastructure market looks like when deployment moves from niche to mainstream.

Q1What do the official numbers show?

SEIA's 2026 storage data says the U.S. added 57.6 GWh in 2025 and now has roughly 163 GWh of installed storage capacity.

Q2How fast is that growth?

The 2025 installation figure was about four times the annual volume from three years earlier. SEIA also says 66% of cumulative U.S. storage capacity was installed during 2025 alone.

Q3Where is storage being used?

About half of utility-scale storage is paired with solar and about half is standalone. California remains the largest state market, but Texas and several fast-growing western states have turned batteries into ordinary grid infrastructure.

Q4What happens next?

SEIA expects around 601 GWh of additional storage to be installed by 2030. If that pipeline arrives, the market grows several times again from today's installed base rather than merely holding the 2025 record.

Q5Why does this matter for power markets?

Batteries are shifting when electricity is available, reducing the need to build as much gas peaking capacity and making more solar usable after sunset. Their role is moving from renewable add-on to core grid asset.
