China is now building half the world’s new nuclear reactors
China is building nearly 40GW of nuclear capacity, roughly as much as every other country combined. The real signal is not just that China likes nuclear. It has turned reactors into a repeatable industrial product while much of the West is still fighting over permits, costs, and who will actually build them.

Q1What do the official numbers show?
The IAEA reactor database lists 37 reactors under construction in China, with almost 40GW of capacity. The whole world has 77 reactors and about 81GW under construction. So China has nearly half the reactors and half the capacity.
Q2Why is this bigger than one large building program?
Because China has made nuclear construction repeatable. It builds similar reactors in batches, uses a large domestic supply chain, and keeps experienced teams moving from one project to the next. That is very different from treating every reactor like a new mega-project.
Q3How fast is China actually moving?
China’s nuclear capacity grew 76% between 2016 and 2024. It started six reactors in 2025 and several more in 2026. Recent Chinese projects have often taken around five to seven years, compared with a global average closer to nine years.
Q4How does that compare with the West?
The gap is mostly execution. The United States still has the world’s largest operating fleet, but it has almost no large reactors under construction. The United Kingdom has two. France is planning new reactors, but its latest project took well over a decade. China is already pouring concrete at scale.
Q5Is China only copying foreign reactor technology?
Not anymore. China originally learned from French, Canadian, Russian, and American designs, but it now builds domestic models such as the Hualong One and CAP series. It also makes most major components at home, which reduces foreign dependence and helps keep projects moving.
Q6Why does this matter right now?
Electricity demand is climbing as countries add factories, electric vehicles, and AI data centers. Solar and wind can grow quickly, but they do not provide constant output alone. China is pairing huge renewable additions with nuclear plants that can run all day, giving it more options than countries waiting for future reactor designs.
Q7So what is the real power shift?
China is building the workers, factories, suppliers, and operating experience needed to dominate nuclear for decades. The country that builds most of today’s reactors may later sell the technology, components, fuel services, and financing to everyone else. This is becoming an industrial race, not just an energy policy debate.
