Applied Electrodynamics says its WaveSight camera can map pipes, cables, studs, and other objects hidden behind walls from across a room, with point clouds accurate to 1 millimeter. Wall scanners already exist, but most must be moved directly across the surface and only reach a few inches deep. The real bet here is turning hidden building infrastructure into something you can photograph.

Applied Electrodynamics officially introduced WaveSight, a radio-wave imaging system designed to see behind walls and other solid surfaces. The company says it can map hidden pipes, cables, structural parts, and defects as a clear, correctly scaled image. It is starting with construction and industrial inspection, and it has opened registrations for preorders.

Q2Don’t wall scanners already exist?

Yes, but they usually work more like metal detectors than cameras. A contractor presses the tool against a wall and slowly moves it across a small area. Bosch says its D-tect scanner reaches around 200 millimeters. Hilti’s larger PS 1000 reaches around 300 millimeters and locates objects with roughly 10 millimeter accuracy. Useful, but still a surface-by-surface inspection process.

The company is pitching it as a camera that works from across a room, not a scanner dragged across every wall. It says the resulting 3D point cloud is accurate to 1 millimeter and works through materials including sheetrock, tile, marble, quartz, brick, and insulation. If that performance holds outside demos, one scan could map an entire section of hidden infrastructure.

Hilti lists around 10 millimeter localization accuracy for its professional concrete scanner. Buildings often have incomplete or outdated plans. Pipes get moved, cables are added, and repairs disappear behind finished walls. The company says hidden surprises contribute to more than $20 billion in avoidable construction rework each year. A remote scan could update the building model before crews cut anything open, turning guesswork into a usable map.

Q6Is construction the only market?

No. The same system could inspect composite factory parts, confirm that hidden components were installed correctly, or screen packages for metallic and non-metallic objects without a fixed checkpoint. The founders are also looking for U.S. defense demonstrations. The bigger idea is one imaging platform for anything normal cameras, thermal sensors, and LiDAR cannot see.

Real field performance. The key questions are scanning distance, speed, price, wall thickness, accuracy across mixed materials, and whether crews can use it without specialist training. The company has built working hardware, but its handheld product is still the next step.
