Alibaba unveils Qwen3.8-Max, China’s latest shot at frontier AI

Alibaba has launched Qwen3.8-Max, a 2.4-trillion-parameter model built for coding, research, visual work, and long autonomous tasks. The tension is not simply that Alibaba made another giant model. Moonshot released the larger 2.8-trillion-parameter Kimi K3 only weeks earlier, turning China’s frontier AI race into a rapid back-and-forth between a startup and one of the country’s biggest technology companies.

Alibaba introduced Qwen3.8-Max, its largest and most capable AI model so far. It has 2.4 trillion total parameters and is designed for coding, research, office work, images, video, and tasks that can run for days with little supervision.

Because Alibaba has scaled fast. The earlier Qwen3-Max had just over one trillion parameters, while Qwen3.8-Max has 2.4 trillion. Bigger does not automatically mean smarter, but this jump shows Alibaba is willing to spend heavily to stay in the frontier race rather than compete only with smaller, cheaper models.

Q3Is it now China’s biggest model?

No. Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 has 2.8 trillion parameters, around 17% more than Qwen3.8-Max. But Moonshot launched Kimi K3 only weeks earlier. Alibaba answering this quickly matters because the size crown is no longer held comfortably by one company. China’s leading labs are now leapfrogging each other within weeks, not years.

Not necessarily. Both models use a mixture-of-experts design, so only part of the full model runs for each request. Qwen3.8-Max reportedly activates about 95 billion parameters at a time. Training quality, data, tools, speed, and cost can matter more than the headline number. The 2.4 trillion figure mainly tells us how aggressive Alibaba has become.

It can accept up to one million tokens in one prompt, compared with roughly 262,000 for the original Qwen3-Max. It is who can serve these systems cheaply, keep them reliable for long tasks, and turn benchmark power into real paying work.
