Neros is ahead of STARK today, narrowly but clearly, because it has stronger proof on the things we weight most: current production, repeated military buying, buyer diversity and the ability to field combat drones by the thousand at low cost.

The two companies are converging from opposite directions. Neros started with one cheap FPV family and built the factory around it; STARK started with a more sophisticated long-range weapon and is expanding outward into command software, maritime systems and several strike platforms.

That makes the headline contract numbers deceptive. STARK can generate far more value from each thousand systems, while Neros can put far more aircraft into military units for the same money. The real comparison is industrial mass versus weapon sophistication, not drone versus drone.

STARK has the stronger route to overturning the ranking: more capital, better individual weapon capability and a broader autonomous-weapons architecture. But it still needs to turn that advantage into predictable serial output. Neros has already done more of the boring part, and right now the boring part counts.

Q1Why are Neros and STARK being compared so much right now?

Neros and STARK are being compared because both are trying to turn the lessons of the Ukraine drone war into a new kind of Western defense company, but they started from opposite ends of the market.

Neros, founded in the United States in 2023, built its early business around Archer, a cheap FPV attack drone designed to be manufactured and consumed in very large numbers. STARK, founded in Europe in 2024, started higher up the capability stack with Virtus, a much larger autonomous loitering munition built for targets more than 100 kilometers away.

The overlap has widened quickly. Neros is now adding Archer AI, the Bandit counter-drone interceptor and technology for controlling multiple drones. STARK has expanded beyond Virtus into Minerva command software, shorter-range Gambit systems, Cascade loitering munitions and Vanta unmanned boats. Both now talk about autonomy, electronic warfare, sovereign supply chains and mass production rather than selling one drone.

The comparison has become especially relevant lately because both companies have crossed into a different scale almost at the same time. The U.S. Army gave Neros an Archer contract vehicle worth up to $500 million, and Neros subsequently raised $250 million at a $2.5 billion valuation. STARK secured a major Bundeswehr loitering-munition program and then raised €500 million at a valuation reported around €3.2 billion to €3.5 billion.

Sequoia has backed both companies. Both operate in Ukraine. Both want to replace slow defense procurement and Chinese supply chains with software-driven weapons that can be upgraded quickly and built by the thousand.

They are increasingly fighting for the same bigger prize: becoming one of the companies Western militaries rely on for affordable autonomous weapons at scale.

Q2Why is Neros vs STARK harder to call than it looks?

Neros vs STARK is difficult to call because Archer and Virtus are built for very different jobs, so comparing contract dollars or drone counts on their own produces a distorted result.

The clearest example comes from military procurement. The U.S. Marine Corps agreed to buy roughly 8,000 Neros drones for about $17 million, according to reporting on its small attack drone program. That works out to around $2,125 per drone across the disclosed package.

Germany's first firm Virtus order covers 2,200 STARK systems for roughly €268.6 million. A simple division gives about €122,000 per system, although the German purchase is structured in operational sets containing aircraft, ground-control equipment, spares and other equipment, so it should not be read as a clean aircraft price.

We are looking at products separated by roughly two orders of magnitude in procurement value. Archer can increasingly be treated like smart ammunition for infantry units. Virtus is closer to a long-range precision weapon that can loiter, search and attack much deeper targets.

Neither private company publishes comparable revenue or ARR figures, which removes one of the usual ways to settle a startup race. Military orders, delivered quantities, repeat purchases, production rates, field use and technical progress therefore tell us much more.

That gives us two legitimate versions of "winning." STARK can create far more revenue from every thousand systems. Neros can place vastly more aircraft into military units for the same amount of money. For leadership today, we put more weight on what militaries are repeatedly buying, fielding and manufacturing at scale.

Q3Does Neros or STARK have stronger military demand today?

Neros has the stronger military demand pattern today, even though STARK currently has the larger disclosed firm order by value.

Neros first proved that Western customers were willing to buy Archer in volume through the International Drone Capability Coalition, which selected the company to supply 6,000 drones to Ukraine over six months. The Marine Corps then moved to roughly 8,000 aircraft. More recently, the Army awarded Neros a five-year Archer IDIQ with a ceiling of $500 million, and Defense Daily reported that the first order under that vehicle already covers thousands of drones.

Those are different buyers and different procurement routes. Neros also has separate purchases from Naval Special Warfare and other U.S. Special Operations organizations. The company now says it has contracts with every component of U.S. Special Operations Command and with about half a dozen allied countries.

STARK's strongest demand evidence is more valuable in euros. Germany placed a firm order for 2,200 Virtus systems worth about €268.6 million, inside a framework that can become substantially larger if qualification and future approvals are completed. STARK also won another European NATO customer, and that customer later quadrupled its Virtus order after receiving an initial batch. The identity and quantities remain undisclosed, so we treat the fourfold increase as a useful repeat-purchase indicator rather than a directly comparable volume figure.

Tagesspiegel has reported that STARK had delivery agreements with five European countries. That gives the company more customer breadth than its German headline contract alone suggests.

Still, Neros currently shows the better combination of large quantities, separate U.S. military buyers and repeated procurement. STARK generates much more contract value from fewer systems, but Neros has already made mass purchasing part of the product story rather than a future ambition.

Q4Is Neros or STARK actually manufacturing more drones today?

Neros is comfortably ahead of STARK in demonstrated drone production today, and the gap is clearer here than almost anywhere else in the comparison.

The progression is unusually well documented. Defense News reported that Neros was producing around 1,500 Archer drones per month in mid-2025. By this summer, The Wall Street Journal reported production around 1,200 drones per week.

A recent filmed visit inside Neros's new 250,000-square-foot Millennium One factory showed the company saying it had moved above 250 drones per day. The same factory tour showed final assembly, ground-station production and end-of-line flight testing under one roof. Neros's founders say they expect to reach an annualized rate of around 130,000 drones by the end of the year, with one million per year targeted for 2028.

We should separate today's output from those targets. The million-drone figure remains a plan. More than 250 per day is a current company-reported production rate, and previous output figures from independent reporting give us a useful historical baseline.

That baseline shows real growth. Moving from roughly 1,500 per month to around 1,200 per week in about a year represents more than a threefold increase in output before the newest factory has reached anything close to its designed capacity.

STARK has also built a sizeable industrial footprint. The NATO Innovation Fund says STARK now operates across five countries and has more than 20,000 square meters of production capacity. Its newest financing is intended partly to bring output into the thousands of systems per month.

The crucial word is "intended." STARK has not published a current production figure equivalent to Neros's weekly or daily output disclosures.

For now, Neros has already reached the part of the curve STARK is financing itself to reach.

Q5Does Neros or STARK have better real-world military proof?

Neros has better real-world proof today because Archer keeps appearing in actual military units and training pipelines, while STARK's Virtus record still contains more conflicting evidence.

Archer was developed around repeated trips to Ukraine and later secured the 6,000-unit coalition order. Its U.S. adoption then moved beyond demonstrations. Marines have trained on Archer at Camp Pendleton, Army personnel have received Archer training through the Drone Dominance program, and the system has appeared in live military exercises and operator courses.

A useful detail came from Pennsylvania National Guard reporting this summer: Archer was the first of eight drone types introduced at a new training facility where soldiers are being prepared to train other soldiers. That tells us more than another successful demo. A military is beginning to build training infrastructure around the product.

STARK also has battlefield experience. Virtus has been supplied to Ukraine, STARK has established an R&D operation there, and a European NATO customer later expanded its order after receiving an initial batch. The Bundeswehr has also continued working with Virtus and Minerva in recce-strike and swarm exercises.

The complication comes from earlier trials. The Financial Times reported that Virtus failed to hit its target in four strike attempts across British and German testing, including incidents in which a drone crashed and another suffered a battery fire. STARK argued that the systems were developmental and subsequently changed significantly.

Later events support the idea that STARK improved the product. Germany still proceeded with a major order after further testing, and the Bundeswehr subsequently ran another exercise involving Virtus, Minerva and Quantum Systems' Vector reconnaissance drone.

We therefore would not describe Virtus as an unproven prototype anymore. But Neros has a cleaner chain from combat feedback to procurement to training to repeated fielding, with fewer public questions hanging over basic reliability.

Q6Is STARK's Virtus actually better technology than Neros's Archer?

STARK's Virtus is the more capable individual weapon today, and the technical gap is large enough that Archer should not be presented as a direct substitute.

STARK says Virtus can travel more than 130 kilometers, remain airborne for as long as 90 minutes and operate through a vertical takeoff and landing architecture. It can search deeper behind enemy lines, carry a dedicated warhead and work with STARK's Minerva command system.

Archer operates much closer to the front. Neros describes Archer Strike configurations with ranges above 20 kilometers and payloads around two kilograms. The aircraft is small enough to be transported and flown by troops who can expend it without treating every launch like a major precision-munition decision.

Virtus therefore gives commanders access to targets Archer cannot realistically reach. STARK has also worked with German warhead manufacturer TDW on the LION STRIKE 110, including a successful integrated live-fire demonstration.

Neros has chosen a different performance envelope deliberately. Weight, range and expensive sensors become disadvantages once the main goal is to produce tens of thousands of expendable aircraft cheaply enough to distribute down to small military units.

So we give STARK the technology win for the aircraft itself. Neros gets more combat mass per dollar, but Virtus can perform missions that Archer simply cannot.

Q7Is Neros or STARK further ahead in autonomous and jam-resistant drones?

STARK is ahead in autonomous command and multi-drone operations today, while Neros currently has the more concrete mass-market response to electronic warfare.

STARK has spent much of its short life building software around the weapon rather than only improving Virtus. Minerva is designed to connect reconnaissance assets, weapons and operators so that a target detected by one platform can be assigned to another. In a Bundeswehr exercise, STARK connected Virtus and Minerva with Quantum Systems' Vector reconnaissance drone as part of a recce-strike chain.

That puts STARK further ahead in the kind of networked autonomy that militaries increasingly want. A drone becomes more useful when the operator does not have to manually fly one aircraft from launch to impact and when reconnaissance, targeting and strike can happen inside the same software flow.

Neros has moved quickly into the same area lately. Archer AI adds terminal guidance and GPS-denied position holding. Bandit is being developed as a high-speed interceptor for larger threats such as Shahed-type drones. Neros is also building the compute and control layer needed to operate several assets together.

Those new Neros products are still early. The company says Archer AI and Bandit are expected to reach combat theaters by the end of the year, so we cannot give them the same weight as the original Archer yet.

Neros does have a practical anti-jamming advantage in its existing product family. The company controls key parts of its radio and electronics stack and has also developed a fiber-controlled Archer variant with Kela Technologies. Fiber control removes the radio link from the equation for missions where that architecture makes sense, which is a very direct answer to the jamming environment seen in Ukraine.

STARK currently leads the higher software layer. Neros is catching up fast, but its newest autonomy products need combat use before we treat that gap as closed.

Q8Does Neros or STARK have the better military customer base?

Neros has the stronger customer base today because its demand is spread across more independent U.S. military organizations rather than leaning heavily on one flagship national program.

The distinction is easy to miss if we only count countries. Neros has been bought by the Army, Marine Corps and Naval Special Warfare, has worked across U.S. Special Operations Command, supplied Ukraine through the international drone coalition and expanded into other allied markets. Those organizations do not share exactly the same acquisition process or mission.

That gives Neros several ways to grow. The Marine Corps can expand its small attack drone program even if an Army requirement changes. Special Operations can buy Archer for a different reason than a conventional infantry formation. An allied government can then adopt the same basic platform through another procurement route.

STARK has a credible European base, including Germany, Ukraine and several other NATO countries. The undisclosed European customer's decision to increase its Virtus order fourfold after receiving the first systems is one of the best pieces of commercial evidence in STARK's favor because money followed initial delivery.

Germany still carries much more weight in STARK's story than any single customer does for Neros. The Bundeswehr program can turn STARK into a major European weapons supplier if it scales as planned, but it also makes execution on Virtus unusually important.

Neros currently has more shots on goal.

Q9Does Neros or STARK have the better drone economics and supply chain?

Neros has the stronger economic model for mass warfare today because it has already combined low-thousands-of-dollars procurement with a supply chain designed to avoid critical Chinese components.

The Marine Corps purchase gives us the best public benchmark. Roughly $17 million for about 8,000 drones implies around $2,125 per aircraft across the package. The Wall Street Journal has separately reported an Archer equipped for attack at around the $5,000 level.

Both numbers belong in a radically different cost category from most Western precision weapons.

Low price changes how the aircraft can be used. A unit can lose drones, train with them frequently and assign them to targets that would never justify a missile costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. The economics begin to resemble ammunition consumption.

Getting there without depending on Chinese electronics is the difficult part. Neros has spent heavily on its own radios, flight-control electronics and other components while progressively bringing more of the stack in-house. Archer is also cleared through the Pentagon's Blue UAS framework.

STARK has its own strong sovereignty argument. It is building Virtus in Europe, integrating German warheads and fuzing, opening facilities across several European countries and investing heavily in domestic electronic-warfare and manufacturing capacity.

However, Europe's established aerospace and munitions industry already knows how to manufacture expensive military hardware locally. Rebuilding the low-cost drone-component chain that China dominates is a nastier manufacturing problem.

Neros has made more progress on that specific bottleneck while keeping the final product cheap enough to be bought by the thousand.

Q10Is STARK or Neros building the broader defense company faster?

STARK is building the broader defense company faster, and this is probably its strongest strategic advantage over Neros.

Virtus is now only one part of STARK. The company has introduced Minerva for command and control, Vanta for unmanned maritime operations, Gambit for shorter-range missions and Cascade for another class of loitering strike. It has also partnered on laser counter-drone technology and on reconnaissance-to-strike integration.

That already spans strike drones, mission software, maritime systems and counter-UAS.

Neros spent more time concentrating on Archer and the manufacturing system behind it. Only lately has the portfolio widened substantially through Archer AI, Bandit and multi-asset control.

The difference looks deliberate. Neros wanted to prove that it could build one family cheaply at industrial volume before adding more mission sets. STARK has behaved more like a miniature defense prime from the beginning, developing several layers of the system in parallel.

STARK's approach gives it a bigger long-term surface area. If Minerva becomes a useful control layer for STARK and third-party systems, the software could eventually matter more than any one aircraft.

There is also more execution load. Every additional weapon needs testing, manufacturing, integration and customer support. Neros has had fewer things to get right at once.

Still, if we ask which company currently looks closer to becoming a broad autonomous-weapons platform rather than a drone manufacturer, STARK is ahead.

Q11Does STARK or Neros have more money to keep fighting this race?

STARK has more financial firepower than Neros today, although Neros's latest raise is large enough that lack of capital is no longer an obvious near-term weakness.

STARK recently raised €500 million from investors including Sequoia, Founders Fund and the NATO Innovation Fund. The NATO Innovation Fund says more than 80% of the money will go directly into research, development and manufacturing, including electronic-warfare facilities and production expansion.

The round valued STARK at roughly €3.2 billion to €3.5 billion according to financial reporting, and its cumulative funding has moved above €600 million.

Neros has just raised $250 million at a $2.5 billion post-money valuation. Combined with more than $120 million raised before the round, the company has now attracted more than $370 million.

STARK therefore has materially more private capital to spend and is valued more highly. That fits its strategy: several aircraft families, C2 software, maritime systems and facilities in multiple countries require a lot of parallel investment.

Neros can now finance an aggressive expansion too. Its newest round is specifically aimed at ramping Archer AI, Bandit and the manufacturing base around them.

We still give STARK this category comfortably. Investors are currently funding STARK as the broader European defense platform and Neros as the dominant mass-drone candidate. The former requires, and has received, the larger war chest.

Q12Which company has more execution risk today, Neros or STARK?

STARK carries more execution risk today because several of the assumptions behind its valuation and order book still depend on Virtus completing qualification and moving into dependable serial production.

The German procurement terms make that unusually visible. Follow-on orders require evidence of qualification and series maturity, and German lawmakers have asked for reporting on delivery quantities, production capacity, pricing and competitive conditions.

The initial 2,200-system purchase is substantial, but the enormous optional framework should not be treated as guaranteed revenue.

STARK also has the earlier Virtus test failures to put behind it. Subsequent Bundeswehr testing and the repeat NATO order are encouraging, and they make the old failures less damaging than they looked at the time. We still want to see sustained serial deliveries before calling the issue fully resolved.

Neros's main risk has shifted elsewhere. Archer itself now has enough procurement and manufacturing evidence that the bigger question is whether Neros can expand without losing its cost advantage. Archer AI and Bandit have to become real military products rather than interesting extensions of the original platform. The enormous Millennium One factory also needs enough demand to justify its eventual capacity.

The downside is less concentrated for Neros. Bandit could disappoint and the core Archer business would still exist.

A serious qualification or production problem with Virtus would hit the center of STARK's current business much harder.

Q13Is Neros or STARK actually leading its own drone market?

Neros currently looks closer to leading its own niche than STARK does, because STARK is fighting stronger direct competitors for the same large European loitering-munition budgets.

Neros certainly has U.S. rivals. Performance Drone Works, Hoverfly, Zone 5, Firestorm and other manufacturers are competing across the Pentagon's rapidly expanding small-drone programs. The Army itself originally selected multiple companies for its Purpose-Built Attritable Systems effort.

Neros has nevertheless moved ahead in the specific mass-FPV race. As seen above, the Army subsequently gave the company an Archer IDIQ worth up to $500 million and immediately began ordering thousands of aircraft under it. Archer is also showing up across Marine and Army training programs at the same time that Neros is reporting the highest visible production rate among U.S. FPV specialists.

STARK faces a tougher competitive map in Europe. Germany deliberately split its first major loitering-munition procurement between several suppliers. Helsing received an initial order for 4,300 HX-2 systems at roughly the same firm contract value as STARK's 2,200 Virtus systems. Rheinmetall later entered the program with its own large order.

So STARK has won a seat at the top table, but it has not taken control of the category. Helsing has far more capital and a deep AI organization. Rheinmetall has existing factories, government relationships and weapons integration expertise. Ukrainian manufacturers continue to push the technology from another direction.

Neros's position is narrower, but it is currently more dominant inside that narrow category.

Q14Who is winning today, Neros or STARK?

Neros is ahead today, narrowly but clearly enough that we would pick it over STARK if the question is which company has built the stronger military-drone business right now.

The reason comes down to three things we care about more than valuation: Neros is producing at a proven rate, its drones keep turning up in separate military procurement programs, and the product is already cheap enough to be purchased in genuinely large quantities.

Recent developments have actually strengthened that case. Neros now says Millennium One is producing more than 250 drones per day, its Army customer has started placing orders in the thousands, and the new $250 million financing gives it enough capital to push into autonomy and counter-drone systems without abandoning the manufacturing model that got it here.

STARK wins several important categories. Virtus is far more capable than Archer on range and individual weapon sophistication. Minerva puts STARK ahead in networked autonomy. Its €500 million financing is roughly twice the size of Neros's latest round before we even account for the stronger euro, and STARK is already building across air, maritime, software and counter-drone systems.

We would still rather see STARK turn more of that potential into repeatable industrial output before putting it first. As pointed out above, Germany's initial Virtus order comes with qualification and maturity conditions, and STARK does not yet publish a current production rate comparable with Neros. The earlier reliability questions around Virtus also raise the bar for proving that thousands of systems can be delivered with consistent performance.

That gives Neros the better position today and STARK the more obvious route to overturning it.

STARK can change our answer if Virtus moves through qualification into predictable high-volume deliveries, additional NATO customers disclose meaningful order quantities, and Minerva starts appearing in operational deployments rather than mainly exercises. If STARK can combine that with production in the thousands per month, its larger capital base and broader product architecture become very hard for Neros to match.

Neros has its own next test. The company needs to convert its Army framework into recurring paid volume, keep Millennium One busy and prove that Archer AI and Bandit work under real combat conditions. If Neros adds useful autonomy without letting Archer drift away from its current cost and production advantages, the lead becomes much harder to take away.

For now, Neros is winning the race to mass-produce and field Western combat drones. STARK is ahead in the race to build the more sophisticated autonomous-weapons platform. We currently put the first race slightly higher because militaries already know how to fund impressive weapons; producing huge numbers of affordable ones remains the harder bottleneck.

Neros vs STARK is not a comparison that can be settled with one number. Their flagship products sit in different price and capability bands, so we broke the question into military demand, manufacturing, field adoption, technical capability, autonomy, customer depth, economics and supply chain, product breadth, financial resources, execution risk and competitive position.

For each dimension, we prioritized the freshest evidence that shows what militaries and customers are actually doing. Firm orders, deliveries, repeat purchases, current production, training and operational use carry more weight here than contract ceilings, announced capacity, future products or long-term production targets.

The final call is an aggregation rather than a count of category wins. We weight demonstrated execution most heavily, which is why Neros can lead overall even though STARK is ahead on individual weapon capability, autonomous command software, funding and product breadth. We also keep firm orders separate from framework ceilings and current output separate from production ambitions.
