Germany’s first orders show why the race is closer than company size suggests. Berlin committed roughly the same initial spending to both suppliers, yet ordered about 4,300 HX-2 systems versus 2,200 Virtus systems. Helsing is winning on affordable mass; STARK is offering the larger, longer-endurance aircraft.

Helsing’s biggest advantage is evidence density. Thousands of HX-2s are operating in Ukraine, the system produced 15 hits from 17 launches in a U.S. Army exercise, and the company is already delivering continuously. STARK’s strongest evidence is different: unusually fast product development and a NATO customer that increased its order after receiving the first systems.

The software race may end up mattering as much as the airframes. Helsing is building a more integrated stack around HX-2 and Altra, while STARK is making Minerva deliberately open to third-party reconnaissance and weapon systems. STARK does not necessarily need to copy Helsing product by product if militaries prefer that architecture.

The gap is meaningful, not dominant. Helsing has far more financial capacity and operational proof, but STARK has gone from founding to frontline deployment and major Bundeswehr procurement in roughly two years. If its manufacturing ramp turns contracted demand into thousands of delivered systems, this comparison gets much tighter.

Q1Why are Helsing and STARK the obvious rivals in Europe’s strike-drone race?

Helsing and STARK are now fighting for the same prize: becoming the European military’s default supplier of AI-enabled strike drones that can be bought and deployed by the thousands.

The overlap has become unusually direct. Helsing’s HX-2 and STARK’s Virtus both sit in the emerging middle ground between cheap FPV drones and expensive missiles. They are designed to strike targets tens of kilometres behind the front, keep operating when GPS or communications are disrupted, and work with reconnaissance drones and battlefield software.

Germany then turned that technological overlap into a procurement contest. The Bundeswehr selected both Helsing and STARK for its new medium-range loitering-munition capability, after testing the companies against the same military requirement. Rheinmetall has since joined the programme as a third supplier, but Helsing and STARK remain the two younger software-defined challengers being compared most directly.

Their ambitions also go well beyond selling one drone. Helsing wants AI software to coordinate sensors, weapons and autonomous vehicles across the battlefield. STARK is building its own command software, Minerva, around an expanding family of unmanned weapons. Both are effectively betting that the next European defence company of scale will combine software, autonomy and mass-produced hardware.

This is why the race has become much more interesting lately. Helsing had the head start. STARK has caught up far faster than a company founded in 2024 normally should.

Q2Why is it still hard to call Helsing vs STARK a one-sided race?

Helsing is ahead today, but STARK is already close enough on procurement, product capability and customer momentum that company size alone gives us the wrong picture.

Helsing was founded in 2021 and spent its early years building military AI software before moving deeper into hardware. It now has far more capital, a broader product portfolio and a larger installed base of strike drones.

STARK only appeared in 2024. Yet within roughly two years, it has put Virtus into Ukraine, secured a major Bundeswehr framework, sold to another NATO military, expanded that NATO order after initial deliveries, raised €500 million and launched additional unmanned weapons.

The German procurement programme captures the tension well. Both companies received initial orders worth roughly €270 million. Helsing is supplying substantially more systems under its first call-off, which points to an advantage in affordable mass. STARK, meanwhile, is selling a larger aircraft with stronger advertised range and endurance.

So we do not need twenty versions of the same question about who has raised more money. The useful questions are narrower: how much hardware is actually deployed, whether militaries reorder it, how the systems behave under electronic warfare, whether factories can keep producing them, how much of the autonomy layer each company controls and how quickly each can adapt when battlefield conditions change.

Q3Which company is actually bigger in strike drones today, Helsing or STARK?

Helsing currently operates at the larger real-world scale, especially once we separate drones that have been announced from drones that have reached military units.

There is no clean public revenue comparison. The Financial Times recently reported that Helsing expects roughly €441 million in company-wide revenue this year, but that includes software and other autonomous systems, so we cannot call it HX-2 revenue. STARK has not disclosed a comparable figure that allows a sensible calculation.

Physical deployment gives us a better comparison. Helsing says thousands of HX-2s have been deployed with Ukraine’s armed forces since the beginning of the year, following an earlier programme involving 4,000 HF-1 strike drones and a subsequent 6,000-unit HX-2 production commitment. A recent interview with Helsing’s Ukraine managing director also said HX-2 is being used operationally at roughly 50 to 80 kilometres in Ukraine’s “Logistics lockdown” effort against Russian supply networks.

STARK has crossed the important threshold from prototype to military delivery. Virtus is being used and tested with Ukrainian forces, Germany has placed a large order, and another European NATO customer is already receiving systems. Public disclosures still do not show a deployed Virtus fleet on the same scale as HX-2.

We therefore put Helsing comfortably ahead on current strike-drone scale. STARK has enough contracted demand to narrow the difference quickly, but it still has to deliver that future volume.

Q4What did Germany actually order from Helsing and STARK?

Germany currently gives Helsing the volume advantage: the first Bundeswehr order covers roughly 4,300 HX-2 systems versus about 2,200 STARK Virtus systems for almost the same initial spending.

Both contracts are worth around €270 million in their first firm call-offs. That makes the quantity difference unusually informative. Germany is initially taking almost 1.95 HX-2s for every Virtus.

We should avoid turning that into a fake unit-price comparison. The contracts include more than airframes, and differences in training equipment, ground systems, launch equipment, support and other components can change the economics considerably.

The procurement still tells us something important about how the Bundeswehr sees the two products. HX-2 currently fits a higher-volume role. Virtus is a much larger aircraft, with greater advertised endurance and range, and Germany appears willing to pay for that additional capability.

Further quantities under both framework agreements remain conditional. Qualification, performance evidence, market checks and future spending decisions still matter. Germany has deliberately kept multiple suppliers alive rather than locking itself into a single winner.

Q5Is STARK Virtus actually better than Helsing HX-2 on paper?

STARK’s Virtus has the stronger headline specifications today, particularly on range and endurance, while Helsing’s HX-2 looks more aggressively designed around compact, affordable mass.

STARK advertises more than 130 kilometres of travel distance, up to 90 minutes of flight time and a dive speed around 250 km/h. Virtus can take off vertically, which removes the need for a separate launcher and makes the same airframe reusable in training.

Helsing advertises up to 100 kilometres of range. The 12-kilogram HX-2 is considerably lighter, and defence reporting places its payload around four to five kilograms depending on configuration. The aircraft uses onboard vision and autonomous terminal guidance to continue a mission when GNSS or the data link becomes unreliable.

Published specifications should be treated carefully here. Different military configurations and reporting have produced varying figures even for the same system, particularly around payload and operational range. Neither company gives outsiders enough standardized testing data to create a clean technical benchmark.

The split is pretty clear anyway. Virtus gives a unit more endurance and launch flexibility. HX-2 gives Helsing a smaller system that appears easier to procure in greater numbers.

Q6Which has stronger military test results today: Helsing HX-2 or STARK Virtus?

Helsing’s HX-2 currently has the better independent test record, although neither HX-2 nor Virtus has earned the kind of reliability reputation that lets us stop asking questions.

The clearest HX-2 result came from the U.S. Army’s Project Flytrap exercise in Lithuania. American soldiers launched 17 HX-2s and reportedly scored 15 hits, with the remaining two described as near misses. That works out to an 88% direct-hit rate in that test. U.S. Army chief technology officer Alex Miller also highlighted the system’s ability to detect and track targets under jamming.

STARK had a much rougher public episode earlier in its development. The Financial Times reported four failed Virtus strike attempts during British and German testing, including a drone that crashed into a forest. Another test reportedly involved a battery fire after impact.

Virtus has clearly improved since then. The Bundeswehr proceeded with procurement after further trials, and STARK later participated in a German military exercise combining Virtus, Minerva and Quantum Systems’ Vector reconnaissance drone. STARK said the integrated system performed reliably in realistic battlefield conditions.

We give HX-2 the lead because its strongest recent result comes from an allied military operating the system rather than from Helsing itself. STARK has recovered from its earlier failures, but we still have less independent performance data showing Virtus repeatedly hitting targets at scale.

Q7What are Ukrainian units actually saying about Helsing HX-2 and STARK Virtus?

Frontline evidence currently favors Helsing, mainly because we can observe far more HX-2 use, although Ukrainian operators have also exposed real weaknesses in the system.

Deutsche Welle recently accompanied a Ukrainian unit using HX-2 near Pokrovsk. One launch had to be restarted after a communication problem between the drone and ground station, and bad weather eventually forced the mission to be abandoned. The same unit showed footage of a successful HX-2 strike against a Kamaz truck.

Ukrainian crews also described a useful improvement cycle from Helsing’s earlier HF-1 system. According to soldiers interviewed by DW, the first versions performed poorly, while later iterations reached hit rates above 50% in their sector after Helsing incorporated frontline feedback.

HX-2 has had its own controversy. Earlier reporting described unsuccessful trials and questions around launch reliability. Helsing challenged some of those accounts and said frontline units subsequently requested more systems. The company says more than six Ukrainian units asked for HX-2 orders and one testing unit requested more than 1,000 additional drones.

STARK has faced similar conflicting evidence. A Ukrainian military unit publicly criticized Virtus, while STARK responded that the same unit had officially requested more systems after what it called high combat effectiveness. STARK also says it has changed Virtus repeatedly following Ukrainian trials.

What separates them right now is simply how much battlefield evidence exists. Helsing gives us many more observable events: failures, fixes, successful strikes and repeat requests. That messy record is more useful than a small number of polished demonstrations.

Q8Can Helsing and STARK actually manufacture drones at wartime scale?

Helsing has more proof of sustained high-volume delivery today, while STARK has built enough factory space and financing that production could become one of the fastest-moving parts of this comparison.

Helsing built its first Resilience Factory around HX-2 and has been delivering several hundred systems per month into Ukraine. Its manufacturing model is now expanding beyond Germany: the company recently chose West Virginia for its first U.S. Resilience Factory, where HX-2 will be produced for the American market.

STARK says its production facilities cover 18,500 square metres across a five-country operating footprint. Its latest €500 million financing is heavily industrial: the company says more than 80% will go directly into R&D and manufacturing, including a push toward production measured in thousands of systems per month.

STARK is financing the ability to reach that rate. Helsing has already shown continuous deliveries into an active war.

Europe’s industrial bottleneck also makes this category unusually unforgiving. A good drone design can become militarily irrelevant if a manufacturer cannot replenish losses or modify production quickly when jammers, air defences or Russian countermeasures change.

We therefore give Helsing the manufacturing edge for now. STARK has enough capital and facilities that we would reassess quickly once it starts disclosing sustained monthly deliveries rather than production capacity.

Q9Is Helsing still ahead of STARK in drone AI and swarming?

Helsing currently has the stronger integrated AI-and-control system around its drones, while STARK’s Minerva gives it a credible and deliberately more open alternative.

HX-2 carries onboard computer vision that can help re-identify and track targets after satellite navigation or communications degrade. Helsing then connects multiple weapons through Altra, its recce-strike software, which is designed to link reconnaissance, target selection and effectors.

The recent U.S. Army exercise added useful outside validation. Soldiers reportedly used HX-2 for reconnaissance as well as attack because the onboard vision system could continue locating targets during jamming.

STARK’s Minerva attacks the same problem from a different angle. The software can coordinate unmanned systems across air, land and sea, automate parts of mission planning and manage swarming while keeping a human responsible for engagement decisions. STARK emphasizes standardized interfaces so third-party systems can plug into Minerva.

The Bundeswehr has already tested that approach with Virtus and Quantum Systems’ Vector reconnaissance drone. STARK has also partnered with Six Robotics on recce-strike integration.

Helsing gets our edge today because the company has spent longer building military AI and now controls both the autonomous weapon and much of the software around it. Minerva could become more attractive to militaries that prefer an open architecture with several hardware suppliers, so this is one of the gaps that could narrow without STARK needing to beat Helsing at every individual AI task.

Q10Which company is winning new military customers faster, Helsing or STARK?

STARK has the sharper recent repeat-order story, while Helsing currently has the broader pipeline of major allied militaries testing or preparing to manufacture HX-2.

The best STARK commercial development lately came from an unnamed European NATO customer. The military placed an initial Virtus order, received the first tranche and then quadrupled the order, according to STARK and German defence publication ES&T. The customer has not disclosed the quantity, so we cannot measure the programme against Germany. A fourfold follow-on after initial delivery is still much better evidence of customer satisfaction than another memorandum or demonstration.

STARK also has Germany, Ukraine and military relationships in the UK, while expanding physically into Sweden and Greece.

Helsing’s geographic reach is broader. Ukraine remains its largest visible strike-drone deployment. The U.S. Army has now tested HX-2 in Europe, Helsing is opening an American production facility, and Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force is currently field-testing HX-2 through a partnership with Rakuten. Those Japanese tests are expected to continue into the autumn.

The split is straightforward. STARK has the better fresh evidence of a customer ordering more after receiving the product. Helsing has more paths toward large future markets.

We therefore give STARK recent customer momentum and Helsing overall distribution breadth.

Q11Is STARK really moving faster than Helsing?

Yes. STARK is currently moving faster as an organization, and its speed has become the strongest argument that today’s Helsing lead may not stay comfortable.

STARK says it went from founding to frontline deployment in 13 months. The company expanded from roughly 120 employees to around 400 in about a year, established operations across five European countries and secured the Bundeswehr programme before reaching its second anniversary.

The product range has also expanded quickly. Virtus is now joined by Cascade, a tube- and canister-launched loitering munition for longer-range missions, and Gambit, a lighter portable reconnaissance-and-strike system. STARK has entered unmanned surface vessels through Vanta and counter-drone technology through partnerships.

Helsing is releasing technology quickly too, but the comparison is different. Five years after founding, Helsing now spans strike drones, military AI, underwater systems, electronic warfare, autonomous combat aircraft and space. That breadth is impressive and creates more places where management attention can be diluted.

STARK wins this section because the amount of military and industrial progress packed into its first two years is exceptional. The remaining question is how much of the new portfolio can follow Virtus from announcement to qualification, repeat orders and sustained production.

Q12What can Helsing build that STARK cannot easily copy?

Helsing’s hardest advantage to copy is the combination of military software, deployed hardware and years of integration work with armed forces; STARK’s most defensible advantage so far is the speed at which it turns frontline feedback into new products.

Drone airframes alone rarely create a durable moat. Batteries, motors, cameras, datalinks and composite structures can improve quickly across an entire industry. The more difficult layer sits around target recognition, navigation under jamming, command software, military certification and integration with other sensors and weapons.

Helsing started at that layer before it manufactured HX-2. Altra, its broader AI work and its existing relationships with European militaries give the company more opportunities to become embedded inside battlefield workflows rather than remaining one interchangeable drone vendor.

Deployment adds another advantage. As seen above, Helsing already has a large HX-2 fleet operating in Ukraine. Every mission can generate engineering feedback on navigation, operators, weather, jamming and target engagement. We should be careful with claims about a magical proprietary “data moat,” but the feedback loop itself is real.

STARK is deliberately reducing the risk of being locked to its own hardware. Minerva is designed to integrate third-party ISR and weapon systems through open interfaces. That may reduce vendor lock-in, yet it could also make Minerva more attractive to militaries that refuse to hand one startup control of their entire architecture.

Today Helsing has the deeper technical position. STARK’s route to beating it may involve becoming the easier software layer for everybody else’s hardware rather than reproducing Helsing product by product.

Q13Who has more money to keep fighting the Helsing vs STARK drone race?

Helsing has a much larger financial cushion today, even after STARK completed one of Europe’s biggest defence-tech rounds.

Helsing recently raised $1.8 billion at an $18 billion valuation. The round was heavily oversubscribed and included Dragoneer, Lightspeed, Goldman Sachs Alternatives, JPMorganChase, CPP Investments and several other large investors.

STARK raised €500 million in its latest financing at a reported valuation of about €3.2 billion. Sequoia, Founders Fund, the NATO Innovation Fund, Project A and other investors participated.

For STARK, €500 million is enough to finance a serious industrial expansion. For Helsing, the latest round alone is more than three times larger before adjusting for currencies.

The valuation gap needs a little more care. Investors are valuing Helsing as a future multi-domain defence company rather than simply an HX-2 manufacturer. The Financial Times recently reported a valuation of roughly 32 times Helsing’s projected annual revenue, which shows just how much future execution is already priced into the company.

STARK also carries very aggressive expectations after moving from a roughly $500 million valuation in 2025 to more than €3 billion in its latest round.

Money therefore strengthens Helsing’s current position without proving that its products are better. The practical advantage is simpler: Helsing can finance factories, inventory, AI research and several military programmes at the same time with far less pressure to choose only one.

Q14Are Helsing and STARK still trying to build the same kind of defence company?

Helsing and STARK are gradually becoming different businesses, with Helsing moving toward a full European defence prime while STARK remains more concentrated on scalable unmanned weapons.

Helsing now operates far beyond HX-2. Its portfolio reaches underwater autonomous vehicles, electronic warfare, battlefield AI, the CA-1 autonomous combat aircraft programme and a space joint venture with OHB. The company increasingly looks like an attempt to build a new technology-driven prime around AI.

STARK remains much closer to the unmanned-effects problem. Virtus, Cascade and Gambit cover different strike-drone missions, Vanta moves the company into unmanned maritime systems, and Minerva provides the common command layer.

That concentration can help STARK. Helsing has more resources, but it is simultaneously trying to compete in several difficult defence markets. STARK can spend a larger share of management attention on the exact unmanned-weapons race we are studying.

One recent development could dramatically change that balance. Quantum Systems co-founder Florian Seibel, who also co-founded STARK, said Quantum could eventually consider combining the companies. Quantum has since raised $1.2 billion at an $8 billion valuation and expects more than €700 million of annual revenue. A combination would join Quantum’s large reconnaissance-drone business with STARK’s strike systems.

For now, STARK has explicitly said there are no merger plans, so we give it no credit for Quantum’s revenue, customers or technology. The possibility is still worth watching because a future combination would create a much larger direct challenger to Helsing.

Q15Are Helsing and STARK actually leading Europe’s whole military-drone market?

Helsing and STARK are setting the pace in Europe’s software-defined strike-drone race, but neither company currently controls the broader European military-drone market.

Quantum Systems is already bigger in tactical reconnaissance than either company is in that category. The company expects more than €700 million of revenue this year, operates drones with militaries around the world and has built a particularly large presence in Ukraine.

Traditional defence companies are also responding. Rheinmetall became Germany’s third supplier of medium-range loitering munitions, with an initial programme worth roughly €298 million covering about 2,500 FV-014 systems. Its existing military sales network and industrial base give it a distribution advantage that startups have to build country by country.

Europe also competes with Ukraine itself. Ukrainian manufacturers operate inside the fastest drone-development cycle in the world, with designs often changing within weeks as electronic warfare and battlefield tactics evolve. European companies cannot assume that more funding automatically makes them the technological leaders.

The narrower category gives us a cleaner answer. Among European companies trying to combine medium-range precision strike, autonomy, mass manufacturing and modern command software, Helsing currently has the strongest overall position and STARK has become its fastest-moving challenger.

Q16Who is winning the Helsing vs STARK drone race right now?

Helsing is winning today by a meaningful margin. STARK has advanced quickly enough that the gap no longer looks comfortable.

Three areas carry the most weight in our judgment.

First, Helsing has more real deployment. Thousands of HX-2s are now operating with Ukrainian forces, giving the company a larger installed base and a much denser stream of battlefield feedback.

Second, Helsing currently has stronger independent technical validation. HX-2 still has frontline problems, but its performance in U.S. Army testing gives us a substantial piece of evidence outside Helsing’s own demonstrations. STARK has improved Virtus enough to win major procurement, yet its public performance record remains thinner.

Third, Helsing controls more of the software and autonomy layer around the weapon while also having far greater financial capacity. Those advantages become increasingly important as the competition moves from individual drones toward networks of reconnaissance systems, strike weapons and command software.

STARK wins several categories that could change the ranking. Virtus has better advertised range and endurance. STARK is developing products faster. Its unnamed NATO customer has already increased an order after receiving the first systems. The company now has enough capital to attempt a genuine manufacturing ramp rather than remaining a small challenger.

Germany also prevents us from calling Helsing dominant. The Bundeswehr deliberately chose both companies, and its decision gives STARK a path to thousands of deployed systems if Virtus qualifies and deliveries proceed as planned.

Our answer therefore stays clear: Helsing leads the European strike-drone race currently. STARK has not caught Helsing yet, but it has moved from outsider to credible number-two challenger remarkably quickly.

Over the next several quarters, the evidence that could reverse the ranking is straightforward. STARK needs sustained deliveries in the thousands, more independently verified battlefield performance and additional repeat purchases from named militaries. Helsing needs to show that HX-2 reliability keeps improving in Ukraine while its expansion into new countries turns testing into large contracts.

If Helsing keeps deploying at its current scale while converting U.S. and Asian interest into procurement, its lead should widen. If STARK executes its manufacturing ramp and its repeat-order pattern spreads to Germany and other NATO customers, this becomes a much closer race.

Methodology and sources

There is no single public metric that can reliably answer who is ahead between Helsing and STARK. Valuation, funding, headline specifications and company size each tell part of the story, so we broke the comparison into the dimensions that most directly show whether technology is turning into real military capability: deployment, procurement, performance, manufacturing, software, customer momentum, development speed and financial capacity.

For each dimension, we reviewed the freshest relevant evidence available at publication, drawing primarily from armed forces and government material, direct company disclosures, frontline reporting and authoritative independent reporting. Older evidence was used mainly when it helped establish a trajectory, show how performance had changed, or put a recent development into context.

We did not treat every datapoint as equally strong. Actual deployment, military procurement, repeat orders, independently observed testing and sustained deliveries generally carried more weight than advertised specifications, planned production capacity, demonstrations or framework ceilings. When accounts conflicted, we looked for corroboration, repeat behaviour and evidence closest to actual military use.

The dimensions are not an equal-weighted scorecard.
