China is targeting 6 trillion renewable kilowatt-hours by 2030

China wants its renewable fleet to generate roughly 6 trillion kilowatt-hours a year by 2030, up from 3.99 trillion in 2025. That target is bigger than all the electricity the United States generated last year, but the real test is whether China can build the grids, storage, and power markets needed to use it.

China released its official renewable energy plan for 2026 to 2030. The government is targeting about 3.5 billion kilowatts of renewable capacity and roughly 6 trillion kilowatt-hours of annual generation by 2030. Q2How large is 6 trillion kilowatt-hours?

It is enormous. The United States generated 4.43 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity from every source combined in 2025. China is therefore aiming to produce about 35% more renewable electricity than America currently produces in total. Its wind and solar output alone could come close to the full U.S. electricity system.

China generated 3.99 trillion kilowatt-hours of renewable electricity in 2025, so it needs to add roughly 2 trillion more by 2030. That is an increase of about 50% in five years. For context, the extra renewable generation alone would equal almost half of current U.S. electricity production.

China has more credibility here than most countries. It passed its previous goal of 1.2 billion kilowatts of wind and solar capacity in 2024, six years ahead of schedule. The bottleneck is no longer making enough panels or turbines. It is connecting them, moving their power across huge distances, storing electricity when supply is high, and preventing clean power from being wasted. China has built massive renewable projects in its western regions, while much of the demand sits in eastern cities and industrial zones.

Q6Does this mean China is quitting coal?

Not immediately. China still uses coal to cover demand peaks and keep the grid stable when wind and solar output falls. But the balance is starting to change. Renewable generation supplied about 38% of Chinese electricity in 2025, and new renewable output covered the entire increase in national electricity demand. If that continues, coal moves from powering growth to acting mainly as backup.

China is already the largest maker and installer of solar panels, wind turbines, batteries, and grid equipment. A domestic electricity market this large gives those industries more volume, lower costs, and faster learning. The important signal is not simply that China wants more green power. It is that renewable electricity is becoming a piece of national infrastructure on a scale no other country currently matches.
