Is European defense tech in a bubble right now?
European defense tech is not in a market-wide bubble today, but its funding boom is much narrower than the headlines suggest: five companies hold 71% of disclosed capital, while most money still sits with businesses that have contracts, deployments or documented operational use.

Send me the signals →European defense tech is not in a broad market bubble right now. It is a concentrated investment boom with a smaller pocket of bubble risk around heavily funded companies that still need to turn contracts and production plans into repeatable operational delivery.
The concentration is extreme: Helsing, Quantum Systems and ICEYE hold nearly 58% of disclosed funding, and the top five hold just over 71%. So the sector can look overheated even while most of its 77 companies remain relatively modestly funded.
The strongest counterargument to the bubble thesis is operational maturity. Roughly 74% of disclosed capital belongs to companies with operational deployments or documented repeated use, while only about 3% sits with businesses whose public evidence stops at an announcement, prototype, demonstration or trial.
Geography and category labels can be deceptive. Germany has only the same number of companies as the United Kingdom but controls around 63% of funding, while several apparently large categories are really one-company stories led by Helsing, Quantum Systems, ICEYE or Isar Aerospace.
Investors are mostly backing integrated companies that own both hardware and software. Drones dominate battlefield visibility, but they are still the core business of only about one in five companies in the dataset.

European defense tech looks more like a highly concentrated investment boom than a market-wide bubble today. The 77 companies in our dataset have disclosed $11.3 billion in funding, but 71.4% of that capital belongs to just five startups.
The European Defense Tech Capital Map ranks every company by cumulative disclosed funding and shows where the capital is going: which countries, technology categories, company types and product models are attracting it.
The ranking also shows how misleading the headline total can be. Helsing, Quantum Systems and ICEYE alone account for 57.5% of all disclosed funding. Companies without a reliable public funding total are included alphabetically after the funded ranking.

Q1Which European countries have the most defense tech startups right now?
Germany and the United Kingdom currently lead Europe with 13 defense tech startups each, followed by France with 11. Finland has six, while Estonia and Ukraine each have five.
The company count suggests three relatively similar leading ecosystems. The capital totals look completely different. Germany’s companies have disclosed $7.14 billion, equal to 63.1% of all funding in the European Defense Tech Capital Map. The United Kingdom has attracted $1.12 billion and France $604.8 million.
Finland is the clearest exception to the headcount ranking. Its six companies have raised $1.56 billion, more than the United Kingdom and France, largely because ICEYE alone accounts for $1.21 billion. Ukraine sits at the opposite extreme: its five companies have disclosed just $10.7 million despite unusually strong operational evidence.
Startup count measures ecosystem breadth. Funding shows where investors think the largest platforms can emerge, and Germany dominates that second measure far more than the first.

Q2Is European defense tech funding concentrated in just a few companies?
Yes, very much so. The top three companies hold 57.5% of all disclosed capital, the top five hold 71.4%, and the top 10 hold 81.9%.
Helsing alone represents 29.7% of the $11.3 billion total. Adding Quantum Systems brings the figure to 46.8%, while ICEYE pushes the combined share beyond half. It takes only three companies to reach 50% of the market’s disclosed funding and nine to reach 80%.
The gap below the leaders is enormous. The top 10 companies have raised an average of $926.7 million each. The remaining 59 companies with disclosed totals average approximately $34.7 million, nearly 27 times less.
That does not make the whole sector a bubble. It means the headline boom is much narrower than the startup count suggests: Europe has a broad base of defense tech companies, but only a small group has been financed as potential global platforms.
Q3Are investors funding European defense startups before they are proven?
Mostly no. Around 74% of disclosed European defense tech funding belongs to companies in the two highest operational-maturity bands. These businesses have either reached operational deployment or accumulated documented combat use and repeated-deployment evidence.
Only $354.4 million, or about 3% of all funding in the European Defense Tech Capital Map, has gone to companies whose public evidence stops at a product announcement, prototype, demonstration or military trial. The clearly speculative end remains small.
The real grey area is the $2.58 billion invested in 13 companies that have secured paid contracts but lack stronger public deployment evidence. This group holds 22.8% of all funding and includes several large bets on future industrial scale, such as Isar Aerospace, STARK and Cambridge Aerospace.
The funding boom is not detached from military traction across the whole market. Bubble risk is concentrated in a smaller group of heavily funded companies whose contracts and production plans still need to become repeatable operational deliveries.

Partly, but the operational core of European defense tech is older than the current funding headlines suggest. Thirty-nine of the 77 companies were founded in 2020 or later, representing 50.6% of the dataset and 52.5% of disclosed funding.
The newest wave is much less mature. Twenty-five companies were founded in 2023 or later, equal to 32.5% of the dataset, but they have attracted only 16.4% of funding. Just six, or 24.0%, have reached one of our two highest operational-maturity bands.
Companies founded before 2020 tell the opposite story. They represent 49.4% of the dataset and 47.5% of funding, but 35 of the 38, or 92.1%, have reached operational deployment or stronger repeated-deployment evidence. ICEYE, Quantum Systems, TEKEVER, Delair and Robin Radar Systems all belong to this older group.
The 2020–2022 cohort sits between the two. Its 14 companies hold 36.1% of all funding, and 71.4% have reached the highest maturity bands. Helsing, Destinus, ARX Robotics and Kraken Technology Group make this cohort the clearest bridge between Europe’s established operational base and its new investment cycle.
So yes, the boom is creating many new companies. But most of the operational depth still comes from businesses that had several years to build products, secure procurement relationships and enter real deployments.
Q5Are European defense startups mostly building drones?
No. Twenty-six of the 77 businesses in our dataset, or 33.8%, are involved in drones or unmanned aircraft, but drones are the core business for only 15, or 19.5%.
Counter-drone companies, autonomy software providers, communications businesses and component manufacturers can all touch drones without fundamentally being drone manufacturers. Fewer than six in ten companies involved with drones are actually centered on them.
Drone-core startups have raised $3.05 billion, equal to 27.0% of all disclosed funding. Even that figure is heavily concentrated: Quantum Systems alone represents 63.7% of the capital raised by the group.
Drones look more dominant when we focus on battlefield evidence. Drone-core companies represent 19.1% of all operationally deployed companies but 33.3% of those with documented combat use. They are not the majority of European defense tech, but they are unusually visible in real operations.
Q6Which European defense tech categories are biggest today?
Air defense and counter-drone systems are currently Europe’s most crowded defense tech category, while defense AI and integrated autonomy attract the most money. We identified 13 air-defense and counter-UAS companies, compared with 11 core autonomous-air companies and seven space-ISR companies.
Funding follows a different hierarchy. Defense AI and integrated autonomy have attracted $3.51 billion, or 31.0% of all disclosed capital, despite containing only six companies. Autonomous air systems have raised $2.34 billion, and space ISR has raised $1.56 billion.
Those totals can exaggerate the depth of individual categories. Helsing accounts for 95.5% of funding assigned to defense AI and integrated autonomy. Quantum Systems represents 83.1% of autonomous-air funding, ICEYE represents 77.5% of space-ISR funding, and Isar Aerospace represents 91.9% of space-defense and orbital funding.
In other words, the most crowded categories are not always the best-funded, and several of the best-funded categories are basically one-company stories.

European defense tech is mainly a combined hardware-and-software market today. Fifty of the 77 companies, or 64.9%, build both, compared with 14 hardware-only companies and 13 software-only companies.
The funding split is even more decisive. Combined companies have attracted 82.6% of all disclosed capital. Hardware-only companies hold 14.5%, while pure software businesses account for just 2.9%.
Software companies are not necessarily less useful or less mature. In fact, 76.9% have evidence of operational deployment, compared with 62.0% of combined companies and 42.9% of hardware-only businesses. They often reach users with far less capital.
Investors are still placing the biggest bets on businesses that control both the digital and physical layers. Helsing, Quantum Systems, ICEYE, STARK, Destinus and Kraken Technology Group all combine proprietary systems with the software needed to operate or coordinate them.
Q8Are most European defense startups actually defense-first?
Yes. Forty-eight of the 77 companies, or 62.3%, are defense-first, while 29 are classified as dual-use.
The capital split is much closer. Defense-first companies hold 53.2% of disclosed funding, compared with 46.8% for dual-use businesses. The median dual-use company has raised $40 million, versus $26 million for the median defense-first company.
Dual-use companies also have a higher documented deployment rate, at 69.0% compared with 56.3% for defense-first companies. Quantum Systems, ICEYE, Isar Aerospace, Varjo, Unseenlabs and several other major businesses built technologies with wider commercial or government applications alongside their military use.
The answer to whether European defense tech is in a bubble depends on what exactly is being tested. Excess can appear in the amount of capital entering the market, its concentration in a few companies, the maturity of the businesses receiving it, or the gap between contracts and proven operational delivery. We treated these as separate analytical dimensions rather than asking one headline number to answer the entire question.
For each dimension, we collected recent public data, prioritized direct company disclosures and government or institutional records, and calculated our own ratios and aggregates across the 77 companies in the European Defense Tech Capital Map. We compared funding with operational evidence, company age, category breadth, product structure and market orientation.
Funding figures represent publicly disclosed capital. We did not estimate missing amounts. Companies without a reliable public total remain part of the company and ecosystem analysis, but their undisclosed capital is excluded from funding totals and concentration ratios.
We assessed product announcements, prototypes, demonstrations, military trials, paid contracts, operational deployments and documented repeated use as distinct levels of evidence. This separates companies funded around future production plans from those whose technologies are already being used in operational environments.
No single ratio determined the conclusion. We assessed concentration, maturity, age, category, product form and orientation together, then looked at the combined pattern rather than letting one prominent funding round define the market.
