Top Defense Tech Startups in Europe: Who Is Ahead Now?
Quantum Systems and ICEYE lead Europe’s defense tech market today, with Helsing, TEKEVER, ARX Robotics and Advanced Protection Systems close behind. But the ranking changes quickly once battlefield use, military deployment and production matter as much as funding.

Funding alone does a poor job of predicting readiness. Helsing leads Europe in disclosed capital, but companies such as Advanced Protection Systems, Granta Autonomy, Swarmer and SensusQ rank far above what their funding totals would suggest.
Europe is already producing integrated defense platforms, but they remain a minority. Just 23% of the companies qualify as full platforms, yet they have captured 55% of disclosed funding and occupy six of the top 10 positions.
Helsing is the clearest European answer to Anduril. Europe still has no equally obvious Palantir equivalent, with defense software funding spread across smaller command, intelligence, simulation and data specialists.
The biggest unresolved question is manufacturing. Most companies can point to a facility or physical product, but only seven publish a concrete capacity figure, production footprint, order volume or industrial target.

The European Defense Tech Readiness Scoreboard compares 77 funded startups and scaleups across 22 European countries. Funding influences the ranking, but so do military traction, operational maturity, product breadth and strategic relevance.
That changes the order a lot. Helsing has raised the most money, while smaller companies such as Advanced Protection Systems, Granta Autonomy and Swarmer rank highly because their operational evidence is unusually strong.

Q1Which European defense startups are actually used by militaries?
Most serious European defense startups are already doing more than demonstrations. Forty-seven of the 77 companies in our dataset, or 61%, have public evidence of operational deployment. Sixty-three have a confirmed paid military or government contract, while 64 have been tested by a military.
We found independently documented combat use or comparably strong repeated-deployment evidence for 21 companies, equal to 27% of the dataset. This group includes Quantum Systems, ICEYE, TEKEVER, ARX Robotics, Delair, Advanced Protection Systems, Robin Radar Systems, Granta Autonomy, Orqa and several Estonian and Ukrainian companies.
The 16-company gap between paid contracts and public deployment evidence is still significant. A procurement announcement confirms demand, but it does not prove that the system has reached real operations.
That is why the European Defense Tech Readiness Scoreboard gives much more weight to deployment and combat evidence. A modestly funded company with battlefield use can outrank a much larger startup whose public record ends at trials or scheduled deliveries.
Q2Are the most-funded European defense startups also the most advanced?
No. The most-funded European defense startups are not consistently the most operationally advanced. Quantum Systems and ICEYE rank highly on both measures, while Helsing combines the dataset’s largest funding total with confirmed deployment. Below those leaders, the relationship gets much weaker.
STARK has disclosed $632 million, but its strongest public evidence currently reaches a paid contract. Cambridge Aerospace has raised $436 million with initial deliveries scheduled. Isar Aerospace has raised $941 million and completed flight testing, but has not yet demonstrated an operational launch service at scale.
The reverse is more interesting. Advanced Protection Systems reaches sixth place in our scoreboard with only $22.8 million disclosed. Granta Autonomy, Swarmer and SensusQ rank highly with $11.4 million, $4.7 million and $4.2 million respectively because each has unusually strong operational evidence.
Funding measures the resources available to scale. It does not prove that a product is already mature, deployed or surviving battlefield conditions.

Q3Is Europe building full-stack defense companies yet?
Yes. Europe is now producing genuine integrated defense platforms, but they remain a minority. We classify 18 of the 77 companies, or 23%, as integrated platforms. Another 36 are multi-product companies, while 23 remain specialists.
Integrated platforms represent less than one-quarter of the dataset but have captured 55% of all disclosed funding. Their median funding is $75.2 million, compared with $28 million for multi-product companies and $20 million for specialists.
Six of the top 10 companies are integrated platforms, and none is a specialist. Across the top 20, integrated platforms account for 10 positions, multi-product companies for eight and specialists for only two.
Broader companies are also more likely to be deployed. Integrated platforms have a 67% deployment rate and multi-product companies reach 69%, compared with 44% for specialists. The companies moving furthest up the European Defense Tech Readiness Scoreboard increasingly combine hardware, software and system integration instead of selling one isolated product.

Helsing is currently Europe’s clearest Anduril-like company, but Europe does not yet have an equally obvious Palantir equivalent. Helsing combines defense AI, mission software, autonomous systems and effectors, has reached operational deployment and has disclosed $3.36 billion in funding.
TEKEVER combines aircraft, autonomy and ISR software. ARX Robotics connects unmanned ground vehicles with an operating system. Advanced Protection Systems combines sensors, software, jamming and counter-drone action. Kraken Technology Group integrates vessels, payloads and maritime mission systems, while STARK is assembling drones, effectors and command software.
These companies resemble domain-specific versions of Anduril, but none yet matches its cross-domain breadth, industrial scale and procurement reach. Quantum Systems and ICEYE are more operationally proven than most contenders, but remain anchored primarily in aerial intelligence and space ISR.
The Palantir comparison is weaker. Europe has 13 software-only companies in the dataset, but together they account for only $324 million, or roughly 3% of disclosed funding. Comand AI, Adarga, SensusQ, TaDaweb and Hadean have real military traction, but Europe’s defense software layer remains split among narrower command, intelligence, data and simulation specialists.
Q5Which European defense startups can actually manufacture at scale today?
Only a small group of European defense startups can publicly demonstrate meaningful production scale today. Sixty-four of the 77 companies manufacture physical products, 62 report manufacturing facilities in Europe and 46 have evidence of active production. Only seven disclose a concrete capacity figure, production footprint, order volume or industrial target.
The 62 companies manufacturing in Europe account for 97% of all disclosed funding. Investors clearly value sovereign production, but public information rarely reveals how many systems those facilities can actually deliver.
Helsing has disclosed orders covering 6,000 HX-2 systems plus an earlier 4,000 HF-1 order for Ukraine. STARK reports an 18,500-square-metre production footprint and framework demand for several thousand Virtus systems after qualification. ARX Robotics says its expanded production and industrial joint venture target several thousand vehicles, while ICEYE plans to reach 100 satellites annually by 2028.
Quantum Systems operates several production sites but does not publish one consistent annual capacity figure. Greenjets aims to move from hundreds to thousands of propulsion units per month, while Aerospacelab has announced a large Belgian satellite megafactory without separating future defense output.
Europe has entered the factory-building phase. Now comes the harder bit: turning those factories into fast, repeatable military deliveries.

We built a common comparison set of 77 funded European defense startups and scaleups, then examined operational traction, military adoption, product breadth, integrated capabilities, manufacturing progress, strategic relevance and disclosed funding.
For each dimension, we gathered the freshest credible evidence available, prioritizing direct company announcements, military and government disclosures, and other first-hand sources. We assessed each item according to what it actually demonstrated. No single funding round, contract, trial, deployment or product announcement determined the ranking on its own.
The final scores aggregate this evidence into a readiness score out of 100. They are designed to show which companies currently combine capital, capability, operational use and industrial execution most convincingly, while preserving the fact that companies can lead for very different reasons.
Operational deployment refers to public evidence that a system has moved beyond development and controlled demonstrations into real military, government or comparable operational use. Testing, signed contracts and scheduled deliveries were recorded separately and were not treated as equivalent to deployment.
Funding figures use publicly disclosed equity and other clearly attributable company funding where available. Undisclosed capital, classified contracts and incomplete private financing data mean that funding totals should be read as documented minimums rather than complete company accounts.
